5. THE CRUST 3-5 miles thick over the ocean 5-25 miles thick on land This is the layer that we live on! The crust is broken into pieces called plates Composed of two types rock, granite and basalt. BACK

THE MANTLE BACK 1,800 miles thick This flows with the consistency of asphalt – This is because of the temperature difference between the top and bottom of the mantle (1600 degrees Fahrenheit at the top compared to 4000 degrees Fahrenheit in the lower portion).
