The Layered Earth Courtney Phelps Earth Science Tenth Grade NEXT
3
Learning Objectives NEXT During this lesson you will learn the following: 1.The students will know and be able to recall the name of each layer of the Earth. 2.Each student will be able to remember and the estimated depth of each layer. 3. The students will be able to apply what they have learned about the layers of the Earth to a quiz.
4
Click on the red dot next to each name in order to find out a little more about each layer. Please click the orange arrow when done!
5
THE CRUST 3-5 miles thick over the ocean 5-25 miles thick on land This is the layer that we live on! The crust is broken into pieces called plates Composed of two types rock, granite and basalt. BACK
6
THE MANTLE BACK 1,800 miles thick This flows with the consistency of asphalt – This is because of the temperature difference between the top and bottom of the mantle (1600 degrees Fahrenheit at the top compared to 4000 degrees Fahrenheit in the lower portion). The movement causes the plates of the crust to move! Made of very hot, dense rock. Makes up 80% of earths volume!!
7
THE OUTERCORE 1400 miles thick Made up of iron and nickel in a liquid state – The metals are backed to tightly in the core that they are not able to move forcing the iron and nickel to be solid. BACK
8
THE INNER CORE 800 miles thick Make up of iron and nickel in a solid state The very center of earth BACK
9
What is the thickest layer of Earth?
10
Right Answer The mantle is the thickest part of the earth. It also makes up 80% of the Earth’s volume. NEXT
11
TRY AGAIN! The crust is only 3-25 miles thick. It is the thinnest of all the layers.
12
INCORRECT You are so close. This is the second most thick layer of Earth but it is not the thickest!
13
Try again The core is actually the 3 rd thickest layer of earth, but not the thickest.
14
Which layer(s) of Earth is made up of nickel and iron?
15
Correct The both the inner and the outer core are made up of nickel and iron! DONE
16
Incorrect This is a tricky question, the inner core is made up of solid nickel and iron. But, what else is made up of nickel and iron? TRY AGAIN!
17
Incorrect Yes, the outer core is made up of liquid nickel and iron. But, what else is made up of nickel and iron? TRY AGAIN!
