2 Why VS? 1.Because you are interested in the visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film, video,…) 2.Because you want to find a job and make a living after graduation. Visual Studies

3 Because you are interested For example, you enjoy going to exhibitions drawing, taking photographs,… reading about the work and life of famous artists discussing movies you’ve watched thinking about the difference between good art and bad art … Visual Studies

5 Because you want to make a living 1.Both the mean and the median monthly income of VS graduates have increased steadily during the past five years, adding up to a 23.4% and 17.3% increase respectively. In the same period, both the mean and the median monthly income of Lingnan graduates have remained roughly the same. 2.In 2012, the mean income of VS graduates was higher than the mean income of Arts, Lingnan and BBA graduates. The number of Visual Studies graduates having found full-time employment after graduation in 2012 was the highest among all Lingnan programs (only a couple of streams in Business do better). No one was seeking employment at the time of the employment survey. Visual Studies

7 …want to make a living (cont’d) Some plausible explanations are: increased recognition of what Visual Studies stands for a growing visual arts sector (art fairs, auctions, galleries, museums,…). Consequently, 44% of full-time employed graduates found work in the same or a related area upon graduation. Visual Studies

8 …want to make a living (cont’d) Between 6.1-23.2% of graduates pursue further studies; for example, at Hong Kong University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design (London), the University of Kent at Canterbury, Birkbeck College, London, and so on. In one sentence, the aim of the program is to enhance your understanding of the visual arts The emphasis is on theoretical understanding (art history, film studies, philosophical aesthetics) There is also plenty of opportunity to improve your practical understanding (service-learning, internships, studio courses) Visual Studies

In addition to the exchange opportunities offered to all Lingnan students, VS has special agreements with the University of Copenhagen (Department of Media, Cognition and Communication) and the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries (University of South Wales). 18 How to get into VS? Criteria: HKDSE results 1 st term GPA These criteria are equally weighted. Art portfolio is not counted. Visual Studies
