The Universe
2
The Big Bang Theory Georges Lemaître was the scientist who proposed this theory He proposed that the universe started as a singularity, then it rapidly expanded, This created the starting fundamental particles Those particles then made stars, planets, and galaxies
3
The Big Bang Theory Scientists believe that the big bang left over CBR, or cosmic background radiation they mapped it once with a probe named COBE (Cosmic background explorer), and again with WMAP, a more advanced probe, getting a better picture Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson found this radiation when monitoring microwave radiation in space, and CRB was signal interference they were receiving
4
The Expanding Universe The universe is steadily expanding, pulling galaxies along with it Edwin Hubble found galaxies outside of ours that are moving further away from ours, each at a different speed Hubble proposed that the universe is expanding, explaining why the galaxies were moving It appeared that all of said galaxies started moving from the same place
5
Space Technology Scientists used many different technologies to advance their understanding of the universe, such as the Hubble telescope and satellites Scientists can see how the galaxies are moving by using a spectroscope and measuring the wavelength of visible light. A galaxy in movement away from us is known to be ‘red shifting” Scientists also use hadron colliders to try to simulate what could have happened at the beginning of the universe by smashing atoms apart
6
Galaxies After the big bang, the universe was only subatomic particles and radiation but after long periods of time, stars and planets started to form together to make galaxies, and are held there by gravity Galaxies come in many different sizes and shapes. Our milky way is a spiral galaxy, a relatively normal shape Scientists believe that a lot of galaxies, including our own have a supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy
