2 Emergency Action Steps 3 steps you should take in any emergency CHECK the scene and the victim CALL 9-1-1 or local emergency # CARE for the victim

3 Check Check the Scene Is it safe? You do not want to become a victim too Look for downed wires, traffic, violent behavior, fire, smoke, dangerous fumes, deep or swiftly moving water If you see any of the above – Do Not Approach the Victim(s) Call 9-1-1 What happened? Look for clues about what caused the emergency and extent of victim’s injuries Look for shattered glass, fallen ladder or a spilled bottle of medicine How many victims are there? Look every where Are bystanders available to help?

4 Check Check the Victim- What is wrong with the Person 4 life threatening conditions Unconsciousness No breathing or trouble breathing No signs of life (no pulse, breathing) Severe bleeding Do not move a victim unless he/she is in immediate danger If victim has any life threatening condition activate the EMS system asap

5 Call Call 9-1-1 if victim is: Unconscious; stays unconscious after seizure Trouble breathing Has chest pain, discomfort lasting 3-5 minutes or longer Severe bleeding; severe headache/slurred speech Severe burn Abdominal pain; poisoning Vomiting or passing blood Has a seizure lasting 5 min. or multiple seizures Seizure and is pregnant or diabetic Injuries to head, neck, back or broken bones

6 Call If any of the situations exist; Call 9-1-1 Fire or explosion Poisonous gas Downed electrical wires Swiftly moving or rapidly rising water Motor vehicle collision Victims that can not be moved easily

7 Making the Call Info to give If you send someone to call; ask them to return after calling Caller’s name # of people involved condition of victim(s); unconscious, chest pain, trouble breathing What happened (car crash, fire) Exact address or location; cross streets, landmarks, name of building, floor, room # Telephone # the call is being made from Care being given Let EMS hang up first

8 If you are alone Call 9-1-1 First if: (cardiac) Unconscious adult victim or adolescent 12 or over A witnessed sudden collapse of a child or infant An unconscious infant or child known to be at a high risk for heart problems

9 If you are alone Care First: Likely to be breathing related emergencies, where time is critical Provide 2 minutes of care then call if An unconscious victim younger than 12 when the collapse has not been witnessed any victim of submersion or near-drowning Drug overdose Victim is in cardiac arrest

10 Care Care for life threatening emergencies before non-life threatening Give care until EMS arrive Breathing emergency takes priority over an injured leg Watch for changes in level of consciousness and breathing Help victim rest comfortably Keep victim from getting chilled or overheated Reassure victim

11 When Not To Transport a Victim When it may further aggravates the injury or illness. When the person has or may develop life threatening conditions. Unsure of the nature of the illness or injury.
