Depression is Not: A passing bad mood. A personal weakness Something to be ashamed of Something you have to go through alone

If someone you know is depressed: Listen Offer emotional support Do not put down his or her feelings Do not accuse the person of faking it. Do not say “Snap out of it.” Encourage him or her to go out, get involved in activities, but do not demand too much.

What to do, continued: Do not ignore remarks about suicide. Reassure him or her that things will improve. Don’t wait to see what will happen, get him or her help.

Symptoms of Depression Ongoing sadness, anxious, or empty mood Feelings of hopelessness, despair Withdrawing from friends, family, and regular activities Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed Problems with sleep, insomnia, or oversleeping

Symptoms of Depression: Problems with eating, too much or too little, often resulting in weight gain or loss Decreased energy, being “slowed down,” always tired Restlessness, irritability, moody, persistent boredom Difficulty concentration, remembering, making decisions

For teenagers additional symptoms can also include: Risk-taking behaviors: drug use, multiple sex partners Trouble with friends Drop in grades Acting out behaviors: fighting, violence, running away, etc.

Symptoms of Depression Ongoing physical complaints that are not helped by medical treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain Cutting oneself; superficial cutting often to arms and legs Thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts Giving away favorite possessions
