1 Commissioning ABT Equipment in the LHC Jan Uythoven ABT TCM 13/01/2015

LHC Commissioning Plan & ABT Powering Tests Jan & Feb ABT commission as much as possible all system for which we don’t need to close the BIS loops Machine Checkout, about week 10 or a bit later Commission all systems without beam for which we need the loops closed One week will be tight, usual fight March / April Machine Commissioning with beam Followed by scrubbing, 50 ns, scrubbing and 25 ns operation 2 Jan Uythoven ABT TCM, 13/1/2015 Latest Quotes: “Single Sector Test weekend 7/8 Feb, but might still have some delay” “First circulating beam in March” “First collisions in stable beams in May”

ABT Commissioning Based on edms documents for MPP Injection and beam dumping system: updated version to be released before end of January 2015 MKQA system and AC dipole: a lot smaller, but missing procedures. To be written down as well. 3 Jan Uythoven ABT TCM, 13/1/2015

Tests without beam – Loops open System Commissioning MKI HV conditioning, soft start etc. LBDS settings, IPOC and XPOC references, BETS etc. TCDQ movement, interlocking… HV performance MKQA, AC-dipole Testing of connections to outside world Beam Interlock System – with BIS team Vacuum System SPS extraction interlocking Etc. For a large part already done, end of January check against updated commissioning procedures and perform the outstanding tests before Machine Checkout period 4 Jan Uythoven ABT TCM, 13/1/2015

Tests without beam, BIS loops closed During week of Machine Checkout A week will be short for this, however the most important tests should really be done before taking first circulating beams. Pressure will be there to postpone to postpone these tests. Will require dedicated time for injection and beam dump as we need the loops ‘for us’ Planning to be organised by OP (RG) Check against commissioning procedures list SPS extraction vs. LHC injection BIS LHC BIS arming sequences BETS interlocks, energy tracking checks Etc. 5 Jan Uythoven ABT TCM, 13/1/2015
6
Tests with beam, Injection Time estimate of tests with beams has been made and discussed within coordination team Time estimate is 7.5 days of 24 hours of injection work up to first stable beams 11 days of 24 hours including setting up of injection during intensity ramp/up and 25 ns To be done in March and April and following months for intensity ramp up 6 Jan Uythoven ABT TCM, 13/1/2015
7
Tests with beam, Beam Dump For beam dumping system, incl. TCDQ, estimated commissioning time with beam 8 full days of 24 hours Not much additional work after initial set-up and tests with beam To be done in March and April 7 Jan Uythoven ABT TCM, 13/1/2015

Conclusions LHC is about to start-up Now: transition from individual equipment (experts) tests to integration tests with the rest of the LHC MPP check Procedures to be finished by the end of this month and check inventory of tests outstanding System tests, stand-alone Integration tests, but BIS loops open Machine checkout tests with BIS loops closed Tests with beam, mainly March and April: many days of ABT work! A lot work to come. Hands and brains needed ! 8 Jan Uythoven ABT TCM, 13/1/2015
