3 I NTRODUCTION Two Convicts escaped from the prison. Everyone was talking about this in the village. So was Joe.He thought one of the convicts had entered Mrs. Parker’s house. Teacher: Was it true? Teacher: Did Mrs Parker try to help him?

4 P.K T ESTING Teacher: What do know about Prison? Students :It is a lonely room with a gate of iron rods, where convicts are kept. Teacher: Who are the convicts? Students :They are criminals, thieves, murderer etc.

5 Mrs. Parker lives in a lonely cottage at Dartmoor.Two boys Alec and Tom come to her cottage. They tell her that two convicts have escaped from the prison.

6 Shortly afterwards Joe also comes there and considers himself a great detective. He enters into a heated arguments with Alec and Tom.

7 Joe also suspects Mrs. Parker.

8 Joe asks her why she has hidden a Bentley sports car in her shed.Mrs Parker is greatly annoyed with him.

9 She tells him that the car belongs to her nephew.She also asks him to leave her cottage and Joe goes away from there. But suspicion also arises in the mind of both the boys.

10 Mrs. Parker tells them the truth. She says that her son Roger Felton was falsely accused of forgery. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment. Mrs. Parker’s son

11 Mrs. Parker wanted to help Roger to escape from the prison. Now she hopes that his son might be one of the escaped convicts. She has kept the car ready for use. Both the boys want to help Mrs. Parker. But Mrs. Parker asks them to leave. Leave from here both of you

12 They hear a knock at the door. When the door is opened a convict enters the cottage.Alec tells him that he need not be afraid of them. His mother has told them his story Mrs. Parker takes the next room. Shortly afterwards the door knocks again.

13 Joe says that he has seen a convict entering the cottage. Mrs. Parker tells Joe that he must have seen her nephew.

14 But Joe says that the man he has seen was in a convict’s dress.

15 In the meanwhile the convict comes there and wearing an ordinary dress. Joe says that the convicts dress must be hidden in the next room. But they do not let him go to that room.

16 In the mean while the warder of the jail reaches there, Joe tells him every thing.

17 The warder goes to the next room and recover the convit’s dress.He says that he will take the convict to the prison in Bentley sports car and also says that it is an important piece of evidence.

18 Joe says that he will also come with them on his bike. But the warder tells him that he might have trouble to pass as the roads are guarded.

19 Joe says that he knows the password as his uncle is a constable he also tells the warder the password.

20 All the three leave for the Prison

21 Now he has escaped with his fellow convict in the Bentley sports car. Joe has told him the password that will get him safely to the prison

22 Mrs. Parker, Alec and Tom are left behind

23 Mrs Parker tells them that the convict was not his son and he was disguised as a warder.

26 QUESTIONS Where did Mrs. Parker live? Who else lived with her? Who brought the news of the escape of the convicts? Why was Mrs. Parker disturbed to hear the news? How did the convict escape the prison? Who was Joe? Why did he come to Mrs. Parker’s house?

27 ANSWERS Mrs. Parker lived in a cottage at Dartmoor. It was on the moors very near to the prison. She lived alone in the cottage. The two boys,Tom and Alec, brought this news to Mrs. Parker. Mrs. Parker’s own son was in the prison. She did not know if one of the escaped prisoners was her own son. That was why she was disturbed.

28 A NSWERS The convicts had been taken to work outside the prison. suddenly, the mist came on. Two f the convicts took advantage of this and escaped. Joe was the nephew of the village constable. He imagined himself to be a detective. He came to mrs. Parker’s house to find out if the escaped convicts were hiding there.
