Getting used to identifying word stress ray.parker@yahoo.co.uk

Getting used to identifying word stress Every word in English that has more than a single syllable will have one of those syllables more stressed than the others.

Getting used to identifying word stress By “stressed” we mean that the syllable is louder, longer, more prominent in speech than the others.

Getting used to identifying word stress Say the word “report” to yourself out loud. (It’s all right – nobody’s listening!)

Getting used to identifying word stress Can you hear that the second syllable (port) is more prominent than the first (re)?

Getting used to identifying word stress The problem for our learners is that this stressing of a single syllable is pretty well unsystematic and unpredictable.

Getting used to identifying word stress So, we have to help them. One way to help is visually – so if we write the word on the board we can indicate where the stress should be:

Getting used to identifying word stress Like this:  report

Getting used to identifying word stress In the exercises that follow, you are asked first to count the number of syllables, then to decide which one – the first, the second etc. is more prominent

Getting used to identifying word stress The slides move on automatically, so there’s no need to touch anything. They get a bit faster as they go along.
