Plants Section A in our Textbook

Parts of a Plant Roots Stem Leaves Flower (Fruit) (Seeds) Video: 1:24

1. Roots Job: Anchor plant Absorb water and minerals 2 Types: 1. Tap Roots – One large main root with smaller side branches – deep 2. Fibrous Roots – many, same sized roots spread out in many directions

2. Stem Job: Hold up plants’ leaves and flowers Transport water and minerals Xylem – From roots to the top (“High to the sky”) Phloem – From leaves down to the roots (“Flows like a waterfall”) Tree Trunks: Annual Rings – each ring = 1 year The more rain, the thicker the ring

3. Leaves Job: MAKE FOOD (photosynthesis) Parts of a Leaf: 1.Petiole – connects leaf & stem 2. Blade – flat part 3. Veins

Ways to Identify Leaves SimpleCompound SmoothJagged LobedNon-lobed

4. Flower Job: Produce seeds Attract insects, birds (to spread pollen)

Parts of a Flower Petals Colorful Pistil (female) Sticky Where seeds form Stamen (male) Makes pollen

Parts of the Stamen and Pistil Video: 3:14

Pollination Process where pollen is transferred by insects, birds, wind, etc. from stamen to pistil in order to form seeds. Video: 2:19

Photosynthesis Chloroplasts – structures in plant cells that hold chlorophyll Chlorophyll – green pigment that traps sunlight Why do leaves change color in the fall?

Photosynthesis (continued) With energy from the SUN, Carbon DioxideGlucose (food) + Water Oxygen Video Photosynthesis 11:57Photosynthesis Photosynthesis – process where plants make their own food by using energy from the sun.

Transpiration Transpiration – process where plants release water through their stomata Stomata – tiny holes on underside of leaves

Plant Adaptations Phototropism- plant adaptation that causes a plant to grow towards sunlight Hydrotropism – plant adaptation that causes a plant to grow towards water Geotropism – plant adaptation that causes a plant to grow towards the center of the earth Thigmotropism – causes tendrils to wrap around other objects

Life Cycle of a Tree Germination (Sprouting) – embryo sprouts Seedling – stem appears and leaves develop **(Then we have the seasons fall & winter) Sapling- ** (Then in the SPRING) ~ new leaves appear ~ bark forms ~ roots spread Tree ~ grows its first flowers ~ trunk measures 4 inches in diameter Video: 1:52
