2. The Fifth Commandment You shall not murder. (Exodus 20:13) Older Translation: Thou Shalt Not Kill

3. The Bible talks about murder: We don’t have the right to kill others: Hebrews 10:30 says: For we know Him who said, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY " And again, "THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE." (NASB) We don’t punish murderers: God does it, but How? (see next page)

4. God permits murderers to be punished Genesis 9:6 (God talking to Noah): Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made man. (NASB) But who does the punishing? (next page)

5. God punishes murderers through government Romans 13:3-4 (Paul teaching us): For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. (ESV)

6. Discussion Question The government’s right to kill murderers is called “capital punishment.” Why have many states temporarily stopped killing murderers? Are soldiers disobeying the fifth commandment when they fight our enemies?

7. When you are not part of government, you are not supposed to kill. If a soldier is home on vacation, does he have the right to kill? If someone tries to kill you, is it OK to defend yourself?

8. Careful of the myths: Purpose of the commands is never to say: I never killed anyone, so I am OK, because: Romans 3:20 says: For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. Jesus is more strict than the original commandments Matthew 5:21-22 (Jesus said): You know that our ancestors were told, "Do not murder" and "A murderer must be brought to trial." 22 But I promise you that if you are angry with someone, you will have to stand trial. 10. Even our thoughts shows we have a sin nature: 1 John 3:15 (Jesus’ disciple John teaches us): Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. (NKJV)

11. How could you hurt someone … In their emotions? In their reputation?

12. Discuss If you hate someone, what does this show you about yourself? (that is, what kind of a nature do you still have, and what do you need)? If you hate someone, you have just caught whom in the act? If you discover that you are hating someone, what should you do next?

13. What about suicide? The word means “self-murder” We often suppose that the person did not do it on purpose. Discuss: what experiences have you had with suicide?

14. If someone feels like suicide --- Remind them that God loves them. Remind them that God will help them through their rough times. Remind them that God has a plan for their life. Remind them that their family needs them. 15. Not hurting means helping The command is: You shall not murder Martin Luther’s explanation includes not harming others, but rather helping others. As in other explanations, he starts by reminding us to “fear and love God.” next:

16. Why say “Fear and Love God?” The “fear” part means that when we catch our old nature hurting someone, or not helping, we ask for forgiveness. The “love” part means that when our new nature wants to know how to show love to God, the answer is to “help and support” the people around us.
