Sickle Cell Anemia
2
What Is It? Sickle Cell Anemia is……. A Genetic disease body produces abnormally shaped red blood cells. Red blood cells shaped like crescent/sickle Don’t last as long as red blood cells (lead to anemia ) Can get stuck in blood vessel blocking blood flow Causing pain and organ damage
3
born with two sickle genes (one from each parent). only one sickle gene = trait is not expressed because it is recessive. About 1 in every 12 African American have sickle cell trait(testing can show if trait is present) Gene responsible for sickle cell anemia is Beta hemoglobin (HBB) / hemoglobin S
5
Fatigue, Fever, Paleness, Increased Heart Rate, Frequent urination, Excessive thirst, Poor Eye Sight, Skin ulcers, Yellowing of both eyes and skin, Delayed growth, Strokes, Breathlessness, Painful and prolonged erections Pain Abdominal Bone
6
Taking supplements of Folic Acid Antibiotics and Vaccines are given to prevent infection Blood Transfusion Bone Marrow or Stem Cell transplants Oxygen loss
