1
Use your own paper Name one organ in the circulatory system. TURN IN YOUR PROJECT!!!!!
2
Life Science Mr. Petriccione
3
The circulatory system carries blood to every part of the body
4
It works with the respiratory system It uses a network of transport tubes, acting like a set of highways and roads.
5
Arteries-carry oxygen rich blood to the cells Veins-carry carbon dioxide blood away from cells Capillaries-exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide between cells
6
The Heart
7
The heart moves blood through four chambers
8
What do arteries do?
9
It enters the right atrium from the vena cava
10
It goes through a valve to the right ventricle The valve prevents blood from flowing back
11
It goes to the pulmonary artery that moves blood to the lungs
12
It picks up oxygen at the lungs
13
It returns to the heart through the pulmonary vein, entering the left atrium
14
From the left atrium, it passes through another valve to the left ventricle The valve prevents blood from flowing back
15
From the left ventricle, it flows to the aorta and out to the body
16
From the Aorta, it moves to arteries and then to capillaries
17
From the capillaries, it drops off oxygen and nutrients at the cells
18
After dropping off the oxygen, the blood moves from the capillaries to the veins to the vena cava
19
What are the four parts (chambers) of the heart?
20
The muscle cells of the heart shorten, causing the muscle fibers to shorten, and the heart muscle to contract
21
Use your own paper What does a valve do?
22
Blood transports oxygen and nutrients to other parts of the body
23
Liquid part of blood
24
Carry oxygen, using hemoglobin
25
Binds oxygen to the red blood cells, using iron
26
Help the body fight infection
27
Help in clotting, to stop bleeding
28
Who has ever heard of it? What is it?
29
Shape of Blood Cells is sickle-shaped What is a sickle?
33
Shortened life expectancy Blood clots are more common because the sickle shape lumps together Oddly, people with sickle cell anemia are immune from malaria It is a genetic disorder
