Homerswood Primary School Year 1 to 4 Maths Parent Workshop Thursday 6 th March 2014
2
Aims To explain how we teach your child to add and subtract. To give you some ideas of how you can help and support your child at home.
3
Addition Vocabulary together more than plus add total and sum
4
Addition Adding practically 3 + 2 =5
5
Addition 6 + 4 = 10 Encourage children to put the biggest number in their head and count on. 6
6
Addition Use of number line to count on 6 + 5 = 61178910 6 54123
7
Place Value Tens and Units Recognizing the value of each digit in 2 or more digit numbers.
8
Partitioning
9
This is a ten stick. It is made up of 10 units, or ones, stuck together. This is a unit. It is one square on its own.
10
What number is this? We have made 13. 1 ten 3 units
11
What number is this? We have made 40 4 tens 0 units
12
Addition using place value on a number square 35+ 26 = ? Find 35 on the number square. Partition 26 = 2 tens + 6 Move down – 45 55 Add 6 more.
13
Addition by partitioning 45 + 34 = 79 45 + 30 + 4 (Partition the smallest number into 10s and 1s) 45 + 4 = 49 (Add the units onto the number) 49 + 30 = 79 (Add the tens onto get the final answer)
14
Using an empty number line So we start at the biggest number…47 So…. 25 + 47 = 72 47 676869 +20 +1 7071 +1 72 +1 47 + 25 =
15
Have a go together 85 + 44 = (40 + 4) 12985
16
3444 5457 +10 +3 So what is 3457 10 + 10 + 3 = 23 So….. + 34 = 57 23 + 34 = 57
17
Number bonds to 10/20/100 10 + 0 = 102 + 8 = 10 9 + 1 = 101 + 9 = 10 8 + 2 = 100 + 10 = 10 7 + 3 = 10 6 + 4 = 10 5 + 5 = 10 4 + 6 = 10 3 + 7 = 10
18
Addition using tens and units It is vital that children understand the value of each digit for column addition. Partitioning
19
Level 3: Partitioned vertical method: 20 + 3 30 + 2 50 + 5 = 55 Level 4: Standard vertical method: 6 2 5 with carrying 6 2 5 with carrying + 3 8 6 6 3 6 6 3 1
20
Subtraction Vocabulary difference between subtract fewer minus take from less than take away
21
4 – 2 = 12 3 4 Taking away practically Subtraction
22
30 – 5 =25 Use of a 100 square to take away 43-20 =23
23
10 – 5 =5 Use of a number line
24
43 – 27 = 2737 +10 +3 4043 10 + 3 + 3 = 16 16 Subtraction using a blank number line (counting on)
25
54 – 32 = 3252 +20 +1 5354 20 + 1 + 1 = 22 22 Have a go together
26
Subtraction using a blank number line Counting Back 67 – 23 = 44 Partition first, then count back. 6744 47 - 20 - 3
27
Column Subtraction 1 5 6 8 3 - 3 1 7
28
How you can support your child Look for and talk about numbers in the environment Play games Shopping Counting on/back Number bonds Doubles/Halves Time tables Division facts
