Mannerism -Mannerism movement emerged and ended the Renaissance in 1520 -Movement caused by religious and political changes in society (depicted in art) -Art had elongated figures to show suffering -El Greco “The Greek” used shades of yellow & green -Mood reflects tensions created by religious upheavals of the Reformation

Baroque -Replaced Mannerism -Began in Italy in the 16 th & 17 th centuries -Adopted by Catholic reform movement & shown in churches -Depicted religious & spiritual feelings, search for power, & used in churches and palaces

Baroque -Gian Lorenzo Bernini built St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome; designed throne -Used light to depict heavenly rays & angels shining down -Painting used dramatic effects to evoke emotion -Caraveggio used light to heighten emotion -Emphasized everyday experience -Depicted religious figures as common people (shocked many people)

Political Thought Thomas Hobbes -Thomas Hobbes; upset by Revolutions in England wrote Leviathan to deal with problem of disorder -Said people were naturally ruthless, preserve themselves; not guided by morals or reason -Formed state & government to keep from destroying one another -Agreed to be governed by ruler & all rebellions suppressed John Locke Wrote Two Treatises of Government describing how governments form Believed in equality and freedom of all people All humans had natural rights (born with); life, liberty, & property Difficulty protecting natural rights so they formed government If government didn’t protect rights of people, they could remove or change government Ideas used in Declaration of Independence & US Constitution
