04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Olymics Project We never really got the chance to celebrate London winning the 2012 Olympics and indulge in total one-upmanship. So let's do it now. Let's look forward to the 2012 Olympics - after all a child you're teaching now may be the star of the event!.

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Carrying the Olympic Torch Introduction The Roamer team have just been accepted for the next Olympics. They are so keen that they are training 25 hours a day. The Olympic Committee have been so impressed by their hard work and positive attitude that they have said that they can carry the Olympic Torch for the last three stages of its journey.

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Carrying the Olympic Torch What you need  3 Roamers with control boxes attached  3 Roamer jackets  3 touch sensors  3 lights  materials for design work.

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Carrying the Olympic Torch What to do 1.Change each Roamer into an Olympic sportsperson. 2.Make an Olympic Torch for each Roamer with a light in it (the Olympic Flame) that is attached to an output line on the Control Box. 3.Attach a touch sensor to the input line on the Control Box and fix it to the back of the Roamer. 4.Program Roamer to respond to a touch, illuminate the light, move forward, turn off the light. 5.Place the three Roamers in a row. Press the first touch sensor so that the light comes on and Roamer moves forward to bump into the second Roamer. (Hint: place a wait command at the beginning of the program.)

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Synchronised swimming Perhaps not the best known Olympic event, but an ideal one for multiple Roamers. Put them in their swimming costumes, place pegs on their noses and program them to "swim" in formation. (Note - in reality water and Roamers are not a good combination.)

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd The Olympic Symbol Try to program Roamer to draw the Olympic Rings. Try to do it within one program. Hint 1 - You need the pen attachment from the pen pack. Hint 2 - you will need to change the step size in order to ensure that Roamer moves to the next circle centre point accurately.

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Canoe Slalom Version 1 - Set out your slalom poles for Roamer to go round. Version 2 - A more difficult version of this would be to have a "two man" canoe. Fix two Roamers together (a loose connection is best - blu-tacked string), then program them both to go round the course together. The different speeds that Roamers move can make this more difficult, as does the fact that the second Roamer will have to travel a slightly different course.

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Show Jumping Create a course for your Roamer horse to go round. This can involve obstacles to go round, ramps to go up and down, see-saws - lots of interesting manoeuvres. The horse that gets round in the smallest number of moves/quickest time wins. You could also then have a dressage competition for the best dressed Roamer horse.

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd 400m Whilst basically a sprint, by having to follow a curved track this makes it more difficult for a Roamer. Is it better for a Roamer to be on the inside or outside track?

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Inventa Activities Inventa really lends itself to the sort of mechanisms and structures that need to be developed for these field events.

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Shotput Create a (lever) mechanism that will project a small missile (rolled up paper) as far as possible within a set area. You will need to create the shotput range which fans out from the lever and is marked off appropriately. Anything landing outside this area is not allowed. Discus Create a spinning mechanism that will release its projectile at the appropriate point to fling it into the marked area (see above).

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd High Jump Version 1 - Design and make a mechanisms that will "jump" over a bar that gets progressively higher. Version 2 - Design and make a mechanism that will throw a (model) person over a bar that gets progressively higher.

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Long Jump Same idea as High Jump but this time they must get as far lengthways as they can.

04/30/2015  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Olympic Medals These Olympic medals have been designed for you to reward good work. Obviously it does not just have to be Roamer/Inventa work, but can add a different touch to your everyday lessons for the duration of the Olympics.
