definition - formal learning* Refers to learning through a program of instruction in an educational institution, adult training centre or in the workplace, which is generally recognized in a qualification or a certificate.

definition - non-formal learning* Refers to learning through a program but it is not usually evaluated and does not lead to certification.

PLAR "the process of identifying, assessing and recognizing skills, knowledge, or competencies that have been acquired through work experience, unrecognized training, independent study, volunteer activities, and hobbies. PLA may be applied toward academic credit, toward requirement of a training program, or for occupational certification."
