What is data? Bunch of stuff that probably has no meaning. If organized well (and summarized) then we say we have Information. Information is money nowadays! 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 2

Some data about the data The total worldwide volume of data expected to reach 6.6 zettabytes by 2020. (Telegraph.co.uk) The digital bits created, replicated, and consumed each year in the US is expected to grow more than 25% a year. (IDC Digital Universe study, 2012) 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 3

Academia and data access Research depends heavily on data. Access to massive sources of data becomes easier. Ex: open access to scientific papers, reports, open government data, user generated content on social media, e-commerce websites data, location based data. 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 4

Start-ups and Open Data Governments and businesses aim to Open their Data to the public. Start-ups should use open data to create new digital services. 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 5

How? Leveraging Open Data by start-ups 1.Defining Marketing strategies / market niche 2.Sentiment analysis through social media (trackur.com) 3.Labor market skills needs: Recruitment agencies data 4.Personal Health assistance using Big-data 5.Research on Governmental Spending, research oriented services based on Open Data by Governments 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 6

How? (cont.) Leveraging Open Data by start-ups 6.Investigative Journalism 7.Ecology Monitoring Systems, Climate Action Plan 8.Open Data visualization techniques: Free Charts, Graphs, Maps with pre-loaded data 9.Smart Shopping: Price alert and similar 10.Recommendation system for trends in Agriculture (example data from State Statistical Office) 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 7

Successful cases in the World Spend Network (UK) Collects the spend statements and tender documents published by government in the UK and Europe and then publishing this data openly so that anyone can use it. Created open spend analysis for central and local government which was used to uncover a 45 per cent delay in the UK’s tendering process, holding up £22 billion of government funds to the economy. 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 8

Successful cases in the World Zillow, a Real Estate advertising network Created a living database of homes across the US. This database is built from a range of sources such as county records, tax data, listing of homes for sale or rental and mortgage information. The website puts the data with information on local land value and house price to create a service which accurately estimates the value of a house at a given address. An advanced statistical predictive tool provides up-to-date information on home values and rental prices. 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 9

Who’s afraid of Open Data? 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 10

What about Macedonia (Balkans)? 1.If all transactions on a local government level in regard to real estate are published (without the sensitive data), real-estate prices and similar services could be offered. 2.Simple price-matching system that is collecting and comparing data from across different business online. 3.Health related applications, such as nutrition facts data (mobile app). 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 11

+26 EURO 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 12

What about Macedonia (Balkans)? 4.Better Journalism? In presence of facts, even the gods are silent. 5.Government spending's on particular issue/category http://spending.data.al/sq/treasury/list/year/2014/per f_id/EURONDERTIMI2000/vlera/5%20100 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 13

758,000 EURO 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 14

Open Data in Macedonia Common problems with open data: 1. Unstructured data 2. Multiple sources 3. Need for pre-processing (sometimes semi-automatic) One advantage: Most of the data is available on the Web (in some form) 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 15

Final thoughts Data needs to be collected first!!! 11/26/2014 Adrian Besimi, Use of Open Data by academia and start-ups 16
