3. Symptoms Bubonic plague  Headache  Chills and fever  Nausea  Vomiting  Back pain  Soreness in arms and legs  Swelling  Internal bleeding

4. Symptoms of Pneumonic, Septemic and Enteric  Coughing up blood  Chest pain  Heavy sweating  No swelling though  No noticeable symptoms  Sometimes purpling of skin

5. What causes the plagues? 1. Small rodents such as rats and squirrels carried the disease 2. Fleas bite the rodent and take the blood from them 3. Flea bites human and transfers the infected blood to them 4. They human develop the disease and begins to show symptoms  In the air  Bacteria called Yersina pestis  Was transferred very easily from person to person

How it contributed to the end of the Middle Ages  Fear from the people about what was happening  It had devastating affects on the people  The drop of population affected it  Population was rebuilt quicker in cities led to a lot of immigration in to the cities These immigrants weren’t able to become employed Led to larger gap between rich and poor

Fun Facts  The song Ring around the rosy is actually about the plague  The Jews were blamed for the plague  They believed that smells could drive the plague away  They would use bleeding to try and cure patients  Told some to drink their own urine  Use urine to indicate what they thought the disease was.  The disease grew in the Lymph Nodes where it was protected from the human body’s immune system

10. Interesting stories  There was a town called Eyam and the disease was brought to their town but instead of spreading it to other communities they refused to leave and wouldn’t let any people come in  The had “Plague doctors” who would either be second rate physicians who really couldn’t get a job, or just people who needed a job and were desperate
