Creation of NYA Continued She convinced her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt to address this issue. On June, 1935, Roosevelt signed and executive order and the NYA was created as a division of the Works Progress Administration. Eleanor visiting children

Purpose of NYA This New Deal program was established to help address the problem of the youth unemployment rate during the Great Depression era. This was done in two ways, first, the administration gave grants to college and high school students in exchange for work. That way, they could get their education and work at the same time. This prevented the youth unemployment rate from rising. A youth in the NYA program preparing surgical materials

Purpose of NYA Continued Second, for the unemployed youth who weren’t in school, the NYA designed a program that combined economic relief and on-the-job train. The program was federally funded and it aimed to provide those youths with profitable skills for the future. Workers attending an auto class Women taking classes to improve their typing

Participants of NYA Eleanor Roosevelt was the programs biggest speaker. She would support the program because it was her proudest work. The Program was headed by Aubrey Willis William, a well-known liberal who was close to Eleanor Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt

Participants of NYA Continued Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Josephine Roche headed the executive committee, composed of departmental officials. Charles W. Taussig was in charge of the National Advisory Committee, comprising thirty-five representatives from a variety of fields. Youth’s were the main participants of the program; male, female, black, or white. Josephine Roche

Projects from NYA In 1937, the program launched its special program that was meant to help African American and it was lead by Mary McLeod Bethune. Bethune became director of the negro affairs for the NYA. She was very instrumental in making sure African Americans got help from the federal government. Mary McLeod Bethune

H OW E FFECTIVE ? The program was because it was created when it was needed the most. The program helped 2.1 million students find jobs in school laboratories, libraries, and playgrounds. The program also helped 2.6 non- student youths find jobs in the construction trades, metal and woodworking, office work, recreation, health care, and other occupations. It was effective at the time, but then the war started.

Unfortunately, during 1939, World War II was approaching and things weren’t looking good for the NYA. Unemployment began to diminish and the war was approaching. Despite the NYA’s success, Congress had to cut it’s funding because the war’s expense was too much. The NYA was abolished in 1943.
