What is your Goliath?
3
Tale of the Tape The Sheep Keeper from Bethlehem Goliath refers to him as twiggy Nice complexion Good Looking The youngest of 7 Still smells like sheep He says he overcame a lion and a bear, but his brothers are skeptical The biggest, meanest, and baddest of the Philistines Mr. Goliath to you 125 pounds of armor 9’9” tall Just the head of his spear weighs 15# Weighing in at over 400 pounds (over 500 with his armor)
4
Our Goliath’s look a little different Do you have a Goliath? Fear of unemployment A past of sexual or physical abuse A failure compared to someone’s expectations Feelings of depression Rejected, abandoned, inadequate
5
What about your history Israel had been getting beat up by the bullies of the Philistines for years Their fathers were unable to overcome They expected to lose because that was all they had ever seen For 40 days, they hid in their tents fearing the giant
6
But I’ve always been that way… Do you reenact the errors of your parents Well my dad was a workaholic and I hated it, but I’m working late today My parents marriage failed so why should I be surprised if mine does I don’t know how to be a good parent because mine weren’t
7
David’s key to victory Everyone was focused on Goliath – Verse 11, 24, 25,33, Saul recommended what he thought was the best solution (not the God solution) – Verse 38-39 So what was the key? – 0 mentions of how big Goliath was – 5 mentions of God leading up to the battle
8
Let’s get ready to rumble! Goliath – Don’t you realize how big I am Twiggy? – Your in my house little man David – I don’t care what type of toys you have big man, I represent the Lord and you can’t talk trash about Him or His people. David – Talk is cheap, God is about to make a statement. You’re not real attached to that head, are you?
9
What did David see? He obviously had to see the giant, he had to see the spear, he had to see the armor He just saw more of God than he did the giant How bout your circumstances? What do you see?
10
The New Testament foreshadowed Goliath is the sin that can only be overcome by faith in the One who saves (Jehovah Hosea) 5 stones represent the 5 marks left on the Saviors body In our weakness, He is our strength (1 Cor 1:27) To overcome sinful things, the battle starts right between the eyes (James 1:12-16)
11
How long will you tolerate Goliath? Do not tolerate 40 days, or more, of the shouts of your Goliath He will not run out of ways to convince you that you cannot, should not, or will not Let your eyes be filled with the size and wonder of a Savior who died for you and a Father in Heaven who protects you
12
Keys to your victory Our Father, who is in heaven Hallowed, Holy is Your Name Your Kingdom come, and Your will be done We trust Him with our daily provision and strength Let us be quick to release others from their debts to us, so that we can also be free Help us protect the space between our eyes from the enemy and his lies Because all of it is Your, the Kingdom, the Power, the Glory, all belongs to You.
