2  Westminster Abbey, starting with the William the Conqueror, is the place of coronation of the kings of England, except for V Edward and VIII Edward, which weren’t crowned.  Westminster Abbey is also the place where some of the most significant people in the nation’s history are buried or commemorated.

3  Westminster Abbey is steeped in more than a thousand years of history. Benedictine monks first came to this site in the middle of the tenth century, establishing a tradition of daily worship which continues to this day.  Church has been the place of coronation of the kings since 1066.

4  960 - First Benedictines came to the island of Thorney. This place is later transformed into Westminster Abbey.  1066 – Christmas, first write down in Westminster Abbey, coronation of the William the Conqueror  1245 – Henry III starts structure of present church  1301 - Created on the throne of the coronation (King’s Edward’s Chair), which is used for all coronations since 1308  1953 - Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II  1997 - The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales  2002 – The funeral of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother

6  The most important wall paintings in the Abbey are from the late 13th century i.e. the figure of St Faith in her chapel and the figures of Christ with St Thomas and St Christopher in the south transept. The series of 14th century paintings of the Apocalypse and the Last Judgement in the Chapter House are the most extensive.

7  The great pavement in front of the High Altar of Westminster Abbey is a unique and remarkable object. The complexity and subtlety of the design and workmanship can be seen nowhere else on this scale. It was laid down in 1268 by order of Henry III who had started re- building Edward the Confessor’s Abbey in the new Gothic style in 1245.

8  Westminster Abbey was rebuilt between 1245 – 1265 from Romanesque to Gothic.  It is a three-aisled basilica, in which the high main nave covers the cross-stellar vault and about half lower lateral aisles covers the cross vaults.
