Water Challenges… Supply & Demand – Limited supply of fresh water – Demand is out pacing supply Urban Run-off – #1 cause of coastal pollution

Urban Run-off challenges every municipality
13
Urban Run-off Just how much? 1” of rain on 1 acre generates 27,000 gallons of water 1” of rain on a 20 x 50 mile heavily urbanized city will generate 17.4 billion gallons of water!

Green Community Makeover Movement By retrofitting existing residential neighborhoods, How much can we lessen demand on municipal storm water and sewage systems ?

http://www.aquascapeinc.com/extreme-green-community-makeover In July 2009 an entire neighborhood received a green makeover by incorporating rainwater harvesting solutions, native plantings, pervious patios, LED landscape lighting and more. Residents of Lakes of Bliss Woods in Sugar Grove, Illinois reap conservation benefits when Aquascape contractors from across the nation arrived to “green” their community. “Neighborhoods created before the popularity of sustainable landscapes can be retrofitted to become environmentally friendly,” explained Ed Beaulieu, chief sustainability officer at Aquascape Inc. “Outdoor conservation efforts need not be limited to new construction sites. Our vision is to create a template for contractors or homeowner associations to implement in greening communities across North America.” Over 30 rainwater harvesting projects were installed for the Extreme Green Community Makeover including ecosystem ponds, rain gardens, RainXchange Rain Barrels, and the RainXchange System paired with a Pondless® Waterfall, decorative fountain, or pervious pavers and fountain. Native plantings, and permeable patios are also incorporated into the residential landscapes. Enter, The Lake at Bliss Woods (Sugar Grove, IL)

The RainXchange ™ Downspout Filter Filters Rainwater Before Entering the Storage Basin 23 Grated lid and layer of gravel removes large debris, such as leaves and twigs Smaller particulates are captured in a 300 micron, easy to clean debris net Molded hose-tail stub fits 3” or 4” corrugated drain pipe Designed to sit at the base of the downspout
24
The Size of the Storage Basin Depends on the Site’s Water Use Requirements 24

The RainXchange ™ Specification Calculator Helps Demystify Designing a Rainwater Harvest System The RainXchange™ Specification Calculator will: Tell you what size system the project will require Include 30 yr average rainfall data for your region Calculate how much water the client’s roof can generate during a rain storm Demonstrate many different scenarios: – The effect of adding or removing downspout filters – Water requirements based on multiple irrigation zones, and plant evapotranspiration rates – The impact of different storage basin sizes on overall water savings annually 27

Booster Pump Provides Water Access Increases Water Pressure for Irrigation 29 The AquaSurge ™ Pumps that are included with the RainXchange ™ Systems are high-flow, low-head pumps. They will provide water for very basic hand irrigation through a short garden hose. The Booster Pumps are recommended to maximize the flow through a garden hose or irrigation line.
30
Overflow Management Infiltration or Redirection is Required 30 Size of Infiltration depends on site soil characteristics and potential overflow quantity
