SacagaweaReview

What genre is “Sacagawea?” “ Sacagawea” is a biography. It tells a story about why a real-life person is important. It tells the events based on actual things that have happened.

What does the detail that the Corps of Discovery consisted of more than 40 men suggest about the size of the expedition? The expedition must have been very large if it consisted of more than 40 men.

Why was Sacagawea important to the expedition? Sacagawea knew the land. She knew the people and the languages. She also knew what was safe to eat, and how to survive in the areas in which they were travelling.

What text evidence tells you that Sacagawea is more valuable than her husband to the expedition? Sacagawea’s husband was hired as an interpreter and a guide, but the text says the only thing he could do well was cook sausage. Sacagawea is more of a real guide, but she is not paid.

Why did the explorers build a fort in the winter of 1804? The explorers built a fort to wait out the winter because it would have been too difficult and dangerous to travel during that time.

How did Sacagawea help when the boat tipped and started to fill with water? Sacagawea stayed calm and rescued the captains’ important things. Without the supplies and other items that she saved, the expedition could not have continued.

What obstacle caused the Corps to build wagons after entering mountain country? A waterfall made it impossible for the expedition to continue by boat.

What does Sacagawea discover when she went to translate at the council with the Shoshones? Sacagawea discovered that the chief was actually her brother.

What details support the idea that the journey across the Rocky Mountains was difficult? The text tells us that the mountain paths were dangerous. The explorers’ feet froze, and they didn’t have enough food.

Why did Sacagawea insist on accompanying Clark when he was going to see the about the whale he had heard washed up on the shore? Sacagawea wanted to see the Pacific Ocean after travelling that far with the Corps. She also wanted to see the whale.

What is the main idea of “Sacagawea,” and how is the selection organized? The main idea of the selection is that Sacagawea was an enormous help to the Lewis and Clark expedition. It is organized in the order which the events took place.

How can you tell that Clark loves Pomp? Clark gives Pomp his nickname. He names a rocky tower in honor of the little boy. Clark also offered to take Pomp back with him and raise him as his own son.

Why didn’t Sacagawea let Captain Clark take Pomp with him to St. Louis? Pomp was not yet two years old and Sacagawea knew he needed his mom. Also, she did not want to give him up.
