Visa Your visa can expire while you’re in the US, but your I-20 and passport must remain valid. If you leave the US with an expired visa, you must obtain a new visa before returning to the US. If you change majors, you will receive a new I-20. Important immigration documents

© 2010 Brigham Young University–Idaho Travel 30 day visa revalidation: You may travel to contiguous countries such as Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, etc. for a short period of time without having to renew your visa if it is expired. If you leave the country and apply for a new visa that is denied, you will be unable to reenter.

© 2010 Brigham Young University–Idaho On-track You must take at least 12 credits. You cannot work more than 20 hours per week unless it is a required internship. Off-track You may take any number of credits. You need to get an off-track override from admissions. If you are taking 12 or more credits, you cannot work more than 20 hours per week. If you are taking less than 12 credits, you may work more than 20 hours per week. Stay in status!

Online Classes Federal regulations allow you to count the equivalent of one class or three credits of online or distance education towards the 12 credits needed to maintain your status. The purpose of this regulation is to ensure that you are on-campus taking classes. For example, you may have 9 credits on-campus and 3 credits online.

© 2010 Brigham Young University–Idaho Internships -Most majors will require an internship in order to graduate -Be sure to plan for one - You will need CPT authorization if it is paid and/or in the country as well as approval from the internship office -If you are on your last semester of classes and only need less than 12 credits to graduate, but still have your internship to do, you STILL have to take 12 credits. Your internship counts as your last semester.

You must receive academic credit for the work experience. Do not begin work until you have your CPT I-20.
