Choose an issue to discuss You will be put in groups of four Choose a topic to discuss for 20 - 25 minutes. Eg. Feedback after visiting a Hotel that you are considering for your brochure Each person needs to choose a significant role in the meeting. Make it seem real (polite, diplomatic, professional) But don’t be afraid to use your imagination…

What kind of things could you discuss? This will depend on the kind of meeting you choose. eg. If 2 people are reporting back after a visit then the other 2 colleagues ask questions and make comments. Information/suggestions can be provided from all sides. Need to come to a decision at the end of the meeting (even if this means doing more research to come to a solution). Consider the next steps, future actions. What needs to be done after the meeting?

Meeting Minutes & Memos Instructions on writing meeting minutes and memos are in the booklet Useful skill to have for your internship I would advise you practising making notes in order to write them up, while other groups do their meetings. You will not be marked but I would be happy to correct them if you wish.

Guidelines In your booklet there are 2 dossiers: 13 Pages – British dossier (for week 5) 12 Pages – United States dossier (for week 8) You can find further detailed instructions in the booklet No more than 5 typed pages Word processed, neatly typed with your name and student no.

The Aim of writing a Note (Synthese) Making it possible for reader to know everything they need to know without doing any extra research Needs to include relevant statistics and figures Need to find a common theme that runs through the articles provided in the dossiers.

How to extract this Information… Most important passages: first + last paragraphs, titles in bold, quotes in bold. Decide what is most interesting / relevant + worth noting down about them Decide what it is the main message of the article Some articles in practice will be more important but never totally ignore any. Taking notes, noting info, figures, statistics.

Structure Introduction 2 or three parts Conclusion Does not need to be the same perfectly transitional structure as an essay. Clear concise, relevant information, to the point.

Things to consider… Short sentences: concise + to-the-point Avoid vague phrases or expressions (eg “some things have changed”) Structure, remain anonymous / neutral (no first person singular / plural) No personal opinions Try not to repeat yourself

Reminder: Appropriate Language more and more → increasingly biggest → largest like → such as but → yet so → therefore too → as well if → whether can’t → cannot
