Overview of AIP WHAT IS THE ACADEMIC INTERNSHIP PROGRAM? It is a program that provides opportunities for high school students to have hands-on experiences in areas of academic or career interests prior to college or post-secondary training.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO STUDENTS? Internships help students to obtain a more realistic view of a career area, Make better decisions about which college to attend, for specific college programs or scholarships. Grade shows on high school transcript, but not computed in the GPA.

WHEN DO STUDENTS INTERN? Students usually spend two afternoons per week after school. Thirty-four (34) hours is the minimum time required to receive credit. Summer interns time will vary, since students have more flexibility.

HOW TO APPLY Juniors and Seniors can apply Sophomores (second semester only) On-Line Go to http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/cmsdepartments/ci/cte/Pages/AcademicInternship.aspx (Scroll to bottom of screen and look for Academic Internship Electronic Application and complete online). Or Get an application from the Career Development Coordinator at your school.

WHEN TO APPLY Applications will be accepted for each semester. However, we will accept applications anytime. The applications received during the following dates will receive priority placement. FALL: March 12 – April 16 Aug. 25 – Sept. 10 SPRING: Nov. 1 – Jan. 7 SUMMER: March 12 – April 16

REQUIREMENTS Commit to internship hours – attending on dates set Complete all assignments Provide transportation

ASSIGNMENTS The following assignments are to be completed: Internship Focus – 5 questions Journal Entries – One for each day you intern (Or as directed by AIP Coordinator) Capstone Activity – Ending Project Time Sheet – Signed by Sponsor Reflection Survey - Online Evaluation – Completed by sponsor All Assignments are completed online using our Moodle Instructional Site. www.elearn.cmscte.org All Assignments are completed online using our Moodle Instructional Site. www.elearn.cmscte.org

BEING SUCCESSFUL Dress Promptness Attitude Agency Rules Attendance Dependability Try to orient yourself to the business. Talk to your community sponsor. Be assertive.

Summer Internship Process 1.Complete the Internship application 2.Complete an orientation session 3.Complete the Survey, confirming that you completed the orientation session 4.If you applied online, you must submit the Agreement that is signed by the student and parent. 5.The CDC or Student Support Coordinator will inform you if you have been selected for placement and placement location or if your application is on the waiting list 6.If selected for placement: the Student Support Coordinator will 1.Have you complete any additional paperwork 2.Schedule the placement meeting at the internship location 3.You must send an email to the Student Support Coordinator on your first day of reporting to the internship.
