Chapter 10 section 3 Pg.313 One of America’s frigates, the U.S.S. Philadelphia accidentally ran aground while patrolling near Tripoli. Defenseless, the crew was captured and taken as prisoners by the Barbary Pirates.

Chapter 10 section 3 Pg.313 Stephen Decatur The U.S. Navy did a secret mission led by Lt. Stephen Decatur to sink the Philadelphia so the Barbary Pirates could not use it. Decatur and his men quietly sailed in at night, boarded the ship, and set it on fire which made it useless to the Barbary Pirates.

Chapter 10 section 3 Pg.313 U.S. marines were sent to attack Tripoli. The marines had to march over 500 miles to make the attack. Tripoli was caught off guard by the surprise land attack. In 1805, the ruler of Tripoli surrendered and signed a treaty promising not to interfere with American ships any more. I promise not to interfere with the might America any more.
