1 Energy and Exergy Analysis of FCCU Pre-Heating Unit of KRPC, Nigeria Conference Presentation At The 3 rd INTERNATIONAL DOWNSTREAM CONFERENCE/EXHIBITION ON PETROLEUM REFINING, PETROCHEMICALS & FERTILIZERS, PORT HARCOURT 2014 August 27-28, 2014

3 INTRODUCTION  Why exergy and energy analysis? Due to the relatively high energy cost as a component of a unit production cost, it is necessary for any plant to carry out analysis of energy utilization. Exergy analysis is a methodology for the evaluation of the performance of devices and processes, this involves examining the exergy at different points in a series of energy-conversion steps. With this efficiencies can be evaluated, and the process steps having the largest losses can be identified (Rosen, 2004). kk. Ideal Work Exergy Destruction/Loss Second Law Efficiency Figure 1. 4 SCOPE OF STUDY  To analyze FCCU Pre-Heating Unit of Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) through energy and exergy perspective.  Sites of primary energy loss and exergy destruction will be determined.  The second law and exergy efficiencies will also be determined.

5 LITERATURE SURVEY  Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC)  It was design and constructed by a Japanese Chemical Engineering Company (CHIYODA)  It was commissioned in 1980 as NNPC Refinery Kaduna, with an initial capacity of 100,000 barrels per stream day [BPSD].  The Refinery was designed to process both Nigerian and imported crude oils into fuels and lubes products.  The purpose of FCCU Pre-heating Unit is to preheat the feed before entering the catalytic reactor.  The most widely used cracking units are the catalytic type with a moving catalyst bed of Zeolite – Y as this gives a higher conversion and selectivity.

10 CONCLUSIONS  The exergy and energy analysis of FCCU Pre- Heating Unit was done successfully.  The exergy destruction (loss work) was found to be high in Heat Exchanger 16E-02.  The calculated second law and exergy efficiencies of the system were 43.61 and 56.99% respectively.
