Our Location Mission Statement The mission of Partnering the Environment and Academics on the Keweenaw (P.E.A.K.) Enterprise is to plan for the future by taking action now. We strive to make a positive impact on our community through project-based learning, collaborating with various community members, and by using all resources made available to us. We are a group of charged, capable young citizens who share a common interest: acquiring the knowledge necessary to implement innovative ideas that will benefit both the community and ourselves. 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Weekdays ( From left to right) Colin Pekkala, Jacob Wells, Cameron McKenzie, Brandon Joyal, Rachel Pakkala, Brian Sakari, Marissa Isaacson, Rachel Kinnunen, Noah Kozminski, Noah Ponnikas, Anthony Burdette, Santiago Roura, Brad Walli (Missing) Partnering the Environment and Academics on the Keweenaw

The P.E.A.K. class has been introduced to the beautiful Swedetown Creek watershed by sitting and sketching what we see along with frequent trips to study the banks. WHAT WE HAVE DONE! We also learned how to use vernier probes, pictured at right to measure water quality. The chemistry of water deals with the fundamental chemical property and information about water. We plan on going to Swedetown to test the following: pH Water temperature Nitrate and Phosphate Water Oxygen Conductivity Water speed Clarity and turbidity Water Pollutants are the chemicals that affect water quality. The leading causes of impairment include: PCB in fish tissue and water column. Mercury in fish tissue. Dioxin produced from car exhaust Over 70% of all Michigan's streams are impaired with these chemicals.

We will carry on our water chemistry work at Swedetown Creek, during which we will test for pH, turbidity, conductivity, oxygen levels, temperature, and water velocity. We will also be looking for benthic macro-invertebrates. Future Endeavors Stream Channel Analysis Bank Height Width and Depth Stream velocity Stream Discharge We will continue to collect and analyze data and report records of the threats to the Swedetown Creek stake holders, DNR, and EPA.
