2 Objectives u Learn what Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) are u Purpose of BBP Standard u Requirements of BBP Standard u Infectious Materials u Tasks where exposures could occur u Fermilab Exposure Control Program u Help/Assistance u Summary

3 Bloodborne Pathogens Pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans. These Pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

4 Hepatitis B Transmission u Mostly through contact with blood u Saliva (human bite) u Semen & Vaginal secretions u Sexual intercourse u VACCINE AVAILABLE TO PREVENT SPREAD

5 Hepatitis B Symptoms u Flu-like complaints u Loss of appetite u Fatigue, muscle & joint aches u Yellowing of skin & eyes u Some carriers have NO symptoms but may still spread disease to others.

6 HIV/AIDS Transmission u Sexual contact with infected person u Direct contact with infected blood u Sharing infected needles (drug use) u Splash of blood in eye, mouth, or open wound (non-intact skin) u Breast milk u NO VACCINE AVAILABLE

7 HIV/AIDS Symptoms u Fever u Rash u Fatigue, joint pain u Diarrhea u Weight loss u Some carriers have NO symptoms but may still spread the disease to others

8 Purpose of BBP Standard Limit exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials at the jobsite

9 Requirements of BBP Standard u Identify Tasks Where Exposure Could Occur u Engineering Controls u Work Practices u Hazard Communication u Education & Training u Hepatitis B Vaccination u Written Exposure Control Plan u Post-Exposure Evaluation and Follow up u Recordkeeping

10 Infectious Materials u Semen u Vaginal Secretions u Cerebrospinal Fluids u Amniotic Fluid u Breast Milk u Saliva in Dental Procedures

11 Tasks Where Exposure Could Occur u Medical Procedures u Dental Procedures u First-aid & CPR u Some maintenance tasks u Some laundry tasks u Some housekeeping tasks

12 Fermilab Exposure Control Program u Exposure control measures u Education & Training u Hepatitis B Vaccination u Written Program

13 Exposure control measures u Hand washing u Containers u Housekeeping u Work Practices u Universal Precautions u Personal Protective Equipment u Disposal of Sharp Objects u Contaminated Laundry

14 Hand washing u Employer provides facility u Lather vigorously-10 seconds or more u Rinse well, point fingertips down u Dry thoroughly u Use towel to turn off faucet, then discard

15 Containers u Appropriate Choice –Leak-proof /blood & fluids –Puncture-proof /sharps u Marked with Biohazard symbol u Red bags may be substituted for labels

16 Housekeeping u Scheduled cleaning u Sterilizing & high level disinfectant kills hepatitis virus u Household bleach diluted 1:10-1:100 works well u Low level germicides NOT effective

17 Work Practices u Universal Precautions u Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) u Disposal of Sharp Objects u Laundry

18 Universal Precautions u All blood & bodily fluids considered contaminated u Appropriate PPE to prevent exposure u Hand washing –immediately after contact –immediately after removing gloves

19 Personal Protective Equipment u No cost to employee u Glasses u Gowns u Gloves u Masks u Face Shields u CPR masks

20 Disposal of Sharp Objects u GLASS –use scoop or shovel not your hands u NEEDLES – NEVER re-cap syringes u Discard in appropriate container u Biohazard label

21 Contaminated Laundry u Handle as little as possible u Wear gloves when handling (gown if necessary) u Placed in bag with label or red bag u Laundered at no cost to employee

22 Education & Training u 90 Days after effective date of standard – (3-6-92) u At time of initial assignment to task with exposure risk u Annually thereafter

23 Hepatitis B Vaccination u No cost to employee u After appropriate training u Employee MAY DECLINE u If you decline, ALWAYS available later

24 Written Plan u Available to employee u Available to OSHA u Schedule for implementing provisions u Procedure for evaluating exposure incidents – Appendix C u Updated annually

25 Help/Assistance u Medical Office –Karen Swanson (x6631) u Laboratory Services –Jack Hawkins (x3082) u Security Department –Bill Flaherty (x4507) u Fire Department –Neil Dal Cerro (x3428)

26 Summary u Learn what Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) are u Purpose of BBP Standard u Requirements of BBP Standard u Infectious Materials u Tasks where exposures could occur u Fermilab Exposure Control Program u Help/Assistance
