Development Number of televisions in homes grew rapidly in the 50s – 5,343,000 - 42,000,000 – Went from luxury item to common Black and white was main view in homes TV Luxuries – Color TV – Remote control NBC,CBS, and ABC: three major networks Studies showed average kid watched an estimated 6 hours a day 50’s TV Timeline

Color TV CBS first color televised broadcast –F–Flaws came with it Poor picture quality Most black and white sets were incompatible with CBS’ system Radio Corporation of America (RCA) –B–Became industry standard when successful, compatible system was formed Worked with NBC

Additional Television Aspects Sporting Events – People of communities gathered around to watch – Olympics were a big event Due to Cold War, rivalries in competition were more present between USA and USSR 1952, telethon was held to raise funds for US team – Donations were called in nationwide Educational television – National Education Television (NET) – 30 stations by 1958 – WQED (Pittsburgh) was first community-supported educational station Fred Rogers (from “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood”) was originally a producer, musician, and puppeteer for “The Children’s Corner” Commercials – New and successful means of advertising
