“Our Hallways are Highways” Driver’s Education Plan MMS Safe & Civil Schools Team, 2008

Student & Staff Surveys  Student and Staff surveys identified 3 areas of improvement for our hallways:  1- Reduce student gathering/grouping in high traffic areas  2- Eliminate running in the hallways and outdoor corridors  3- Respect others’ space and property  Most of the problems are in the “square” – the hallways containing lockers and 2- way traffic

Goals:  Students will move from location to location in the hallways in a safe and appropriate manner  All Students and Staff will know and apply 3 basic expectations while moving from place to place in the MMS hallways  The plan will use a “rules of the road” approach

Student Gathering/Grouping in high traffic areas  Students will not gather in “NO PARKING” zones. These will be designated with RED TAPE on the floor and signs posted in the halls  Each locker represents a “Parking Space” for no more than 2 students.  Students may stand and talk in groups larger than 2 in other areas – on the edges of the hallway.

Walk on the RIGHT side of the Road  Hallways in the “Square” will have a YELLOW LINE down the middle.  Students and staff will walk on the RIGHT side of the YELLOW LINES when possible

Students will WALK in the halls at all times  Hallway Speed Limit is 4 MPH.  How fast is 4 MPH? A brisk walk appropriate for a hallway that is NOT CROWDED  4 MPH is still too fast for a crowded hallway. Do not drive “Too fast for conditions”  This also applies to outside corridors

Respect Others’ Space and Property  Keep hands and feet to ourselves  Reckless Driving  Road Rage  Tailgating  Leave others’ lockers and locker doors alone  Hit & Run

Citations  Students who repeatedly violate the “Rules of the Road”, or commit a violation that is excessive, will receive a TRAFFIC CITATION.  Logged in attendance  Parent phone call  Traffic Citations can include Lunch Detention, After School Detention or Lunchroom Cleanup.  Repeat offenders may have their Driver’s License Revoked. This means a loss of their passing period.

Summary  Walk on the RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD – no faster than 4 MPH  Do not gather/group in NO PARKING ZONES unless YOUR locker is there  Be safe – RESPECT OTHERS’ SPACE AND PROPERTY  WALK at all times
