Catchy Characteristics of Poetry
3
Let’s review the four characteristics of poetry that we’ve learned so far.
4
So Far, We’ve Learned About… 1.Figurative language: similes, metaphors, and alliteration -Pleasingly Plentiful Poetry Pockets -“Yesterday, it felt like a tropical paradise.” -“Learning how to write poetry is a breeze!”
5
So Far, We’ve Learned About… 2.White Space: places space between different parts of the poem (moving DOWN the poem) -Makes the poem look neater! - Makes the readers stop and think about a part of the poem they just read!
6
What’s Meant by ‘White Space’? dear hallway You are really long like a maze I wish I could run around in you but my teacher won’t let me because I might crash into someone or trip and fall but if I were the principal I’d let everyone run around in you all the time dear hallway you are really long like a maze I wish I could run around in you but my teacher won’t let me because I might crash into someone or trip and fall but if I were the principal I’d let everyone run around in you all the time
7
So Far, We’ve Learned About… 3. Line Breaks: places space between different words of the poem, and start a new line (moving ACROSS the poem) -Makes the reader wonder what’ll happen next! -Makes the reader notice certain words more than others!
8
What’s Meant by ‘Line Breaks’? dear test whenever I take you I get nervous I get butterflies in my stomach and it’s hard for me to think could I please take you some other time? dear test whenever I take you I get nervous I get butterflies in my stomach and it’s hard for me to think could I please take you some other time?
9
So Far, We’ve Learned About… 4.Sensory words: words that help describe what the poet is talking about. They describe what we… -see -smell -hear -taste -touch
10
But WAIT! We’re forgetting two other very important things that poets must keep in mind!
11
Poets Must Also Remember That… the title of the poem gives a hint for what the poem will be about the poem has a main idea, which lets the readers know what it’s about
12
Today, we ’ ll be using all of the things we ’ ve just learned about by making our OWN poems!
