2. Mail for Matty Monday Hallway Greeting: How do we keep in touch with family and friends who are far away? Welcome Message Our theme this week is Keeping in Touch. Who are some people with whom you keep in touch? How do you keep in touch with them? In 2002 astronaut Ellen Ochoa kept in touch with friends and family on Earth using e-mail. I think that’s cool! What do you think random means? Context clues are words or sentences before or after an unfamiliar word. Use them to help you figure out the meaning of the unfamiliar word. Tyler and Nancy sent some emails. Tyler sent three more than Nancy. If Nancy ate two, how many emails did Tyler send? Austin B. visited a website and saw five chickens and three pigs. How many legs did he count on those animals? Tasks: Solve the math story problems in your task journal. 5. Telephone Thursday Hallway greeting: What year was the telephone invented? Welcome Message On March 10, 1876, inventor Alexander Graham Bell shouted "Mr. Watson, come here; I want to see you," into the mouthpiece of a speaking machine he had built. Bell's assistant, Thomas Watson, had another part of the machine in a different room. To Bell's surprise, Watson came to him immediately. For the first time, spoken sounds had been heard over a speaking machine, or telephone. How would our lives be different without the telephone? 7. Pair-a-Dice Processing Dear Juno How do Juno and his grandmother feel about each other? How can you tell? Why couldn’t Juno read the letter his grandmother wrote? How was he able to read the letter anyway? What are some problems that can happen when relatives live far from each other? What items would you put in an envelope to send to a faraway relative to tell them about your life? Think about the story, Mail for Matty. How are Juno and Matty alike? Use the text and create your own question for the group.
