STEELE’S SIX FUNCTIONS IN MY PRACTICUM CLASSROOM Jessica Menninger September 30, 2014 Classroom Design Kindergarten

SECURITY & SHELTER The classroom environment needs to feel safe and comfortable, both physically, and psychologically. Having a bathroom in the classroom takes anxiety out of having to walk down the hallway alone. This gives them the ability to go when they need to.

SOCIAL CONTACT SOCIAL CONTACT This is represented by the interactions between the student: teacher, and the student: student. The teacher sits close to her students in her rocking chair, while telling stories and having talks, with the student on the rug in front of her. The students’ desks are grouped together in fours, providing students with social contact throughout the day.

SYMBOLIC IDENTIFICATION Represents the children in some way. Whether it is their work, pictures, word wall words or what they are studying, you should be able to know something about the class. The students made their names with paper and they are on display. The students played a matching game to get to know each other. Now their pictures remain on display. The students add to their word wall each week.

TASK INSTRUMENTALITY TASK INSTRUMENTALITY This addresses how the environment helps you carry out what you need to do. The behavior chart helps keep the students on task, the cubbies allow the children to have a designate space for his/her possessions, and the mailboxes allow the students to easily put his/her work away.

PLEASURE Is the little touches that make a classroom enjoyable or feel welcoming. There is a bulletin board that features a sign that says “On the Road to Success.” Mrs. Valenti kept the car theme for her room. The classroom features a large carpet, similar to this one, where the class frequently comes together to meet.

GROWTH This is represented by having spaces that allow the children to display their work throughout the year. The students add to their number line daily, counting each number again every day.
