1 NEW JERSEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS BOMB THREAT PROCEDURES 2010-2011

2 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF FACULTY AND STAFF DURING A BOMB THREAT

3 NOTIFICATION AND HANDLING PROCEDURES Telephone, electronic or written threats must be taken seriously! 1.Phone: Use the N.J. State Police Bomb Threat Checklist. 2.Letter: Save the letter and envelope and limit handling. 3.E-Mail: Print out and save the e-mail. 4.Graffiti: Evacuate and secure the immediate area. 5.Rumor: Write down what was heard and report it to administration.

4 Handling Procedures for All Staff Immediately notify the school administrator in person or via a non-cellular phone or hand- delivered message. See Yellow and White STEP Chart – 2 nd white tab down Secretaries should check their bomb threat checklist as soon as the announcement to evacuate has been made NO TWO WAY RADIO OR CELL USE

5 Fire Drills vs. Bomb Threat Evac. Fire DrillBomb Threat Windows and doors are closed Open windows and doors Turn Lights OFFLeave lights ON No searchAll rooms searched Exit according to room chart Use fire drill chart, then proceed to designated Steinert area

6 EVACUATION PROCEDURES A.Gain control of the class. B.Direct students to gather personal belongings. C.Visually sweep the room for suspicious packages/materials. D.Instruct students to turn off all cellular phones and to not use them until the OK is given. E.Take the class roster and the day’s attendance with you when evacuating.

7 F. Exit the room with the class. Ensure that no one is left behind. G. DO NOT TOUCH THE LIGHT SWITCH. H. Leave doors and windows open. I.Leave the Green card next to the door in the hallway to show that the room has been searched. J.Lead the class out of the building to the designated assembly area. K.Take attendance. L.Notify administration that all students are accounted for.

8 Duties and Responsibilities after Evacuation Keep your class together and in the designated area. Do not allow any students to leave staff supervision. Do not attempt to re-enter the building. Do not allow any students to return to the building. Notify administration if a student attempts to leave the assembly area. Do not speak to media or let them interview students. Notify school administration if media attempts to interview you or the students. Await further instructions from administration.

9 When Emergency First Responders Arrive… Emergency personnel will assume command and control of the situation. Keep your class together and organized. Do not allow any one to go back into the building. A parent pick-up area will be set up if needed. Only re-enter the building when administration gives the order.

10 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF STAFF DURING A NON-FIRE EVACUATION

11 Non-fire evacuation procedures: Teachers and Staff Know the evacuation routes. Gain control of the class. Direct students to gather personal belongings. Instruct students to turn off all cellular phones and not turn them back on until the OK is given. Take student roster, day’s attendance, and green window emergency procedure card with you. Exit the room with the class and make sure no one is left behind. You may turn off the light switch. Close the doors and windows. Lead the class out of the building and to the designated assembly area. Good weather – Steinert Football Bleachers Bad weather – Steinert Auditorium Take attendance. Follow the predetermined protocols to notify administration that all students and yourself have been evacuated (raise your green card).

12 Post Evacuation Procedures After you have safely evacuated, move to the designated assembly area. Keep your class together. Do not allow any students to leave staff supervision. Do not attempt to reenter the building or move to another area. Do not allow any students to return to the building. Notify a school administrator immediately if any student attempts to leave the assembly area. Do not speak to the media or permit the media to interview students. Direct any media personnel to the designated media holding area where all press must remain. If anyone attempts to interview you or one of your students, notify a school administrator.
