6. ROLE PLAY IDENTIFY some common facial expressions that may be used in a restaurant setting that communicate various reactions about the environment or the food to someone without speaking. With a partner, one person will role-play acting out the expression and the other person will guess what it is communicating to the waiter or waitress. PREPARE and ROLE-PLAY a dialogue between a Czech waiter or waitress and a difficult foreign guest with many special food allergies, needs and requests. The guest wants the wait staff to explain what is Svíčková, Guláš, Vepřová se zelím a knedlíky, Španělský ptáček, Kanec se šípkovou omáčkou, Utopenec, Švestkové knedlíky and rakvičky se šlehačkou. But the wait staff cannot understand the guest‘s Czech pronunciation. Take turns as waiters and guests. What kinds of possible scenarios could such a guest really encounter? Exercise 5

7. RESEARCH What are some of the common national dishes in Hungary, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Poland, Georgia, Slovenia, Kazakhstan or some other country? Role play being a Czech tourist in that nation‘s restaurant and trying to order a meal. REFLECT: Consider how different cultures are known for their foods or their relationship to foods. America is known for its fast foods. India is known for its spicy foods. Japan is known for its seafoods. Brazil is known for its beef, etc. While these may be stereotypes, there are food preferences that can be identified and food preferences. What stereotypes or food preferences are you aware of for other countries? Exercise 5

8. DISCUSS AND DISCOVER How do you interpret the meaning of the phrase, ˝You are what you eat˝? How may this be true for individuals and nations alike? DISCOVER:There are several international movements using food as their theme, such as Slow Food (http://www.slowfood.com). Slow Food was started to counteract the impact of fast food. Their website says, ˝to change the world, you have the change the menu first. ˝ React to this statement. How is it true or not true for you?http://www.slowfood.com Is there a relationship between food, politics, and civil society? Discuss as many points of view as possible. Exercise 5

FOLLOW-UP INTERNATIONAL FOODS: research unusual international dishes and create a mock menu that you use in your role-play with international dishes and their pictures, from various Internet websites, e.g. http://ethemes.missouri.edu/themes/1456 http://ethemes.missouri.edu/themes/1456 FOOD MOVEMENTS: Research more international food organizations such as Food for Peace, or Chefs for Peace. In small groups, summarize what their organizations do, what is their mission, and what is their impact.
