Leto, (Apollo’s mother) had an affair with Zeus and was soon to have a child. Hera was furious and cursed Leto so she could not have a child on firm land. Hera sent the great serpent Python after Leto, but south wind faster making python drift away. Soon she gave birth to a set of twins on the island of Delos (a floating island). They were named Apollo and Artemis.

Apollo is the sun God and the god of art. Apollo was the most beautiful of all Gods. As a child he went on many adventures and was very mischievous. Later in Apollo’s life he became a patron of music, poetry, mathematics, and medicine. Although Apollo did good deeds, he also did many cruel deeds.

Myth 1- Apollo seeked vengeance on the snake Python (Hera’s snake) because it tried to kill Leto, his mother. He killed Python with Hephaestus’s bow and arrow. Myth 2- Apollo wanted to be the best in every art, but a satyr named Marsyas was just as good as him. Apollo challenged him to a contest. The loser will have a penalty chosen by the winner. Apollo won by cheating, so he skinned Marsyas alive and nailed his skin to a tree. A stream of water gushed out of the tree roots and created a river.
