ECU OFFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY ECU OFFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY “Free Wheeling”: Attack style mentality drives this offense. It is a mentality that applies constant pressure to break down the defensive team’s resistance. We must, first, prepare properly for our attack and, second, limit the ability of the defensive team to recognize and/or anticipate our intentions. We will create the illusion of doing many things while we are, in fact, being simple and basic. I believe you throw to score and run to win.

1. Diversified Attack We must create the illusion of many things while we are in fact being simple and basic. A. Illusion – Disguise with constant change. 1. Formations a. Alignments b. Movement c. Shifting 2. Multiple Personnel Groups Many players with specific roles. 3. Multiple Plays Volume of plays derived from a few basic concepts centered around specific skills and techniques. (Do lots of things well.)

2. How we Operate (Think Touchdowns) a. Down the field passing game with high % completion as its foundation. (Multiple pass protection = basic techniques). b. Run game primarily from passing formations. (Core of run concepts with basic techniques). c. A balance of Pass (60%) and Run (40%). (Normal down and distance). 3. Big Play Production a. Feature our skill and showcase our talent. D. Fox M. Townes A. Brown C. Dempsey b. Use deception in play development.

4. Free Wheeling Attitude in Our Attack a. We must attack = no waiting = no hesitancy. 1. Full speed – fast break attitude and action. Speed and quickness to attack must be our edge. 2. We must be first – cadence vital. Get off and being the attack; beat everyone to the punch. 3. Must have excellence in our execution. 4. We must be our best in the 4 th quarter with the game on the line. 5. Minimum Errors – Poise The confident athlete: a. No Fumbles b. No Interceptions c. Few Sacks d. Few Penalties

EVERYBODY HAS TALENT DIFFERENCE MAKERS 1. Play up to full potential. 2. Play at your best each week. 3. Distractions individually to a minimum. 4. We – utilization of each player’s A.Gifts B. Talents C. Showcase our playmakers! 5. Right strategy – tactic at right time. (Play – calling) 6. Play together – mechanically execute. BE A MACHINE!

2. 7. Chemistry of the squad – people in this room will: A. Commit B. Trust in each other C. Be successful due to people in room D. Not allow us to fail E. WE ALL TOUCH EACH OTHERS SUCCESS -FOOTBALL IS THE ULTIMATE TEAM SPORT!

ROOTS OF THE OFFENSIVE SYSTEM 1. Designed to make QB successful – because the QB drives the engine. (QB must be an extension of Coach Brindise). 2. Run game to be GREAT – Commitment. 3. Throw early to run later. (If you have some great plays in your game plan – DON’T BE AFRAID TO CALL THEM!) 4. Don’t be afraid to call trick plays anytime, anywhere!

OBJECTIVE: (How do we make it happen?) A. MENTAL DEVELOPMENT (ATTITUDE)  Knowledge is Power!! (Players AND Coaches)  We attack with an attitude (mind set) B. SKILL DEVELOPMENT  Strength and Conditioning – Coach Grieco is the best in the nation!  Athletic ability – What are YOUR best skills?  Position Fundamentals C. COMPETITIVE – TEMPO  Practice Environment (Enthusiasm) Classroom Environment (Teach from authority; can’t talk soprano and expect base.)

II. THE SYSTEM: The key to every successful system is the ability of the players to execute the system! PLAYERS WIN GAMES – NOT SYSTEMS!! We will give the players a great chance to be successful with our system. Build the foundation of our offensive system! A. Multiple Personnel Groups  21  12  11  10 – Spread em out!  22  20  23 – Beat them up! B. Huddle and Dispatch Command  Conduct & Attitude  Formations DisciplineQB  CadenceMust Master

A. Run Game  Two Back Formations, 1 Back Formations  “7” Man “Core” Blocking Schemes B. Protections  Drop Back 1. Mike Declaration Schemes 2. Slide Declaration Schemes  Play Action 1. Slide Declaration Schemes 2. Mike Declaration Schemes C. Pass Game  Drop Back 1. Down the Field/Checkdown 2. High Complete %  Play Action 1. Down the Field/Checkdown 2. High Completion % 3. This is how we make our “Chunk” plays!

III. THEMES OF OUR OFFENSE Consistency, Efficiency & Performance A. Consistency: Confirming to the same “principles” or “course of action”. Everyone on the same page! B. Efficiency: Producing the “desired response”. *Frustrate defenses with our mix. C. Performance: To fulfill an obligation or requirement; accomplish something as promised or expected.

IV. FORMULA: Create an environment that everyone can do their job successfully! Equals => Off-Season Program!! – Did a great job! Three Key Elements: A. Details-Details-Details  The backbone of our success!  Be an expert: 1) Players –know your assignments 2) Coaches – know ALL players assignments inside & out. B. Communication  The bridge to building “trusting relationship” (always communicate, disagreements are OK) C. Trust!!!  Any successful relationship cannot survive without “trust”. IV. 75 V. OFFENSIVE STYLE (What we must have!) A. The ability to push the ball downfield to create explosive (big) plays! Control the flow of the game. “Controlled Chaos”. B. Aggressive pass protection unit! Ability to change the launching point of the QB. Movements, screens, nakeds to help the line! C. Physical downhill run game. D. Fundamentally sound football teams consistently win!!! It starts with:  The Huddle  Breaking the Huddle  Cadence  Shifts & Motions  Pre-Snap Recognition  Communication

VI. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Coaches and players) Always bring consistent “effort and energy” to the workplace!! A. Coaches – Coach, Coach, and Coach some more!  Teach  Demand Perfection *Teach fundamentals, technique, and schematics through successful communication!!  Preparation This is your job!  Performance *Consistent in their preparation efforts to be able to perform at their “highest level”. FINAL GRADE = PERFORMANCE ON SATURDAYS!! B. Players

FINAL QUESTION TO OUR OFFENSIVE COACHES & PLAYERS: WHY NOT BE GREAT? *If you’re going to do something, do it the best it has ever been done!

Winners & Losers A Winner makes commitments, a Loser makes promises. A LOSER blames “politics” or “favorites” for his failure. A WINNER would rather blame himself than others, but he doesn’t waste much time on any kind of blame. A WINNER, in the end, gives more than he takes. A LOSER dies clinging to the illusion that winning means taking more than you give. Which one do you want to be, A winner or a loser?
