2 Description Acne is the most common skin disorder in the U.S. It is characterized by pimples on the face, chest, and back. It occurs when the pores of the skin become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Acne is common during puberty when a person is turning from a child to an adult, because of high levels of hormones.

3 Scientific description
Propionibacterium acnes or Acne vulgaris In most cases it is caused by bacteria entering your pores. These bacteria produce molecules which incite an immune response, leading to inflammation and acne symptoms.

4

5 85% of young adults suffer from acne

6 Symptoms Whiteheads Blackheads Crusting of skin bumps Cysts
Papules (small red bumps) Pustules Redness around the skin eruptions Scarring of the skin

7 Cause of Disease The likeliness of acne can be determined by genetics.
Environmental and diet changes can also contribute to acne outbreaks. Puberty and changes in hormones cause much acne (teens). Different skin types can be more prone to acne than others (oily skin).

8 Cure If acne is worsening people may need to visit a dermatologist.
Various medications and acne washes can be prescribed. Eating healthier and keeping your face clean will lessen acne (no greasy foods, wear less makeup). There are also many at-home remedies for acne.

9 Worst case scenario Scars can develop if the acne is very bad.
Patients may need radiation treatment to get rid of bacteria within the pores. The pimples can become so badly infected that it is more difficult to treat. In most cases acne can be prevented, treated, and resolved.
