Datos Importantes 105,000,000 million people live in México. The money used in México is called the peso. Approximately $1.00 US dollar equals 15 pesos. Keep in mind this fluctuates daily. The symbol used for the Mexican peso is the same as our dollar sign - $ Mexico City (México, D.F.) is the capital. It is the largest city in the western hemisphere with a population of over 22 million in the greater Mexico City area.

Los días de fiesta Mexican Independence day is Sept. 16 th, NOT May 5 th like commonly thought. Cinco de Mayo (May 5 th ) is celebrated more in the US than in México. Celebrates the Mexican Victory over the French Army at Puebla de los Angeles in 1862. May 1 st – Equivalent of our Labor Day February 24 th – Flag Day The vast majority of Mexican’s are Christian so the Christian Holidays are also celebrated. Día de los Muertos – Nov. 2 nd which honors the deceased.

Indigenous Cultures Aztecs Mayans The Aztecs were located in what is today Mexico City. One of the most popular Aztec artifacts can be seen today in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. It is called the Piedra del Sol or the Sun Calendar. It weighs over 25 tons! The Mayans inhabited the Yucatan Peninsula area. They were known for their great math skills. The Ruins of the ancient city of Chichén Itzá include structures built for worship, sports and studying astronomy.

Comida Mexicana Some popular Mexican dishes include tacos, tortillas, enchiladas & chocolate The original Mexican tortilla was made of corn. They did not start making flour tortillas until the Spanish brought flour with them in the 1500’s.

Datos divertidos e interesantes The Mexican Jumping Bean is actually a small seed that resembles a “frijole” or bean. When it’s warmed, the heat of the sun or the palm of your hand it moves violently and sometimes jumps into the air. Chewing Gum is originally from México. The turkey originated in México. México is the 14 th largest country in the world!
