2. Queen Elizabeth High ELA What is an Exemplar? An exemplar is an authentic example of student work annotated to illustrate learning, achievement, and quality in relation to levels described in our Alberta learning outcomes.

Because we use the same rubric for each grade level, we rely on student examples to provide the “anchor performances” to illustrate the grade level of performance Guides teachers in their interpretation of curriculum levels when making professional judgments about students’ work Illustrates key features of learning, achievement, and quality at a particular stage of student development Helps students, teachers, and parents to identify levels of achievement and next learning step Enables students to more accurately assess themselves Functions as an illustration of the rubric being used – enhances its validity and purpose

Existing exemplar banks (from other areas) for 7 and 8 are not specific to our needs There has been an expressed need for this at QE A good exemplar bank is used for instruction as well as assessment PAT (&DIP) exemplars reflect first draft work and are specifically for summative evaluation AB Education specifically states that PAT/DIP exemplars are not intended for instructional use

Queen Elizabeth High ELA What we have done in Alberta to create exemplars… Collected examples of student writing that have come from exams and have them annotated by exam markers (we’ve all seen them). The examples are first draft works completed by students in exam conditions Asked teachers to voluntarily contribute student examples. There are a few examples available here (CBE enduring understandings)

The marking is either holistic or rubrics based and reflects teacher judgment. The annotations are added by teachers or curriculum specialists. In Nova Scotia… (http://nswritingexemplars.ednet.ns.ca/overview.htm) In the Nova Scotia Writing Exemplars project, teachers, administrators and students used Ontario Ministry of Education writing tasks and rubrics (scoring scales) with Nova Scotia students. The resulting Nova Scotia writing samples were marked holistically. Those selected for inclusion in this website represent four levels of writing achievement at each grade level, from grades one to eight. The choice of samples reflects the professional judgment of Nova Scotia teachers. The process used for the Nova Scotia Writing Exemplars Project serves as a model for Nova Scotia school boards, schools, and teachers in setting writing tasks in the context of regular classroom work, developing scoring rubrics, assessing the writing of students, and planning for the improvement of student writing.
