If funds remain, OSPI notifies districts with schools that have the next highest levels of free/reduced price lunch eligibility

Statutory Requirements (RCW 28A.150.315) Priority list based on free/reduced lunch eligibility in October of prior year Once funding is received, funding continues even if F/R eligibility decreases At least 1000 hours of instruction A curriculum that offers a rich, varied set of experiences that assist students in: Developing skills in reading, mathematics, and writing Developing communication skills Providing experiences in science, social studies, arts, health and physical education, and a world language other than English Acquiring large and small motor skills Acquiring social and emotional skills Learning through hands-on experiences

Statutory Requirements (continued) Establish learning environments that are developmentally appropriate and promote creativity Demonstrate strong connections and communication with early learning community providers Participate in kindergarten program readiness activities with early learning providers and parents Administer Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS)

10. Implementing the Family Connection Determine kindergarten schedule and timing for conferences. Options include: “Slow start” of half-day of school, half-day of conferences “Late start” of school to allow full days for conferences “Jump start” prior to first day of school Schedule conferences with families Ensure that each student meets his/her own teacher 10

Whole Child Assessment Prior to October 31, teachers assess students’ strengths Using Teaching Strategies GOLD®, teachers assess six areas of development and learning -Physical, social-emotional, language, cognitive, mathematics, literacy The assessment is administered once a year. Teachers can voluntarily evaluate students more than once to document growth 11

13. Two Types of Waivers for WaKIDS 180-day waiver to provide full-days for meetings with families at the beginning of the year Waiver from implementing WaKIDS in 2013 – 14

14. 180-Day Waivers for Family Connection 2013 legislation (HB 1723), if signed by the Governor, will allow districts to use up to 3 school days for the purpose of meeting with families to meet the requirements of the Family Connection component of WaKIDS. Districts needing more than 3 days may: Apply for a 180-day waiver from the State Board of Education Using early release days or evenings for family meetings does not require a 180-day waiver

15. Waivers from 2013-14 WaKIDS Implementation Districts can apply for waivers from implementing WaKIDS (RCW 28A.655.080) Five districts received waivers in 2012 – 13 Waiver decisions are made by the SPI, in consultation with the Director, Department of Early Learning Applications will be due 21 days after the budget is adopted The waiver application will be available on the WaKIDS website.

District Checklist Notify OSPI through iGrants that the district will accept the state funding Prepare for WaKIDS Family Connection Determine when family connection meetings will take place and when kindergarten classes will begin Schedule individual meetings with families Two-day teacher training (required) Contact your ESD to determine dates for WaKIDS trainings, and inform teachers to register for trainings
