Properties of Magnets Polarity Both North & Both North & South ends on EVERY magnet South ends on EVERY magnet Opposites attract Like poles repel
6
What causes magnetism? Spinning or moving charges create a magnetic field (and we don’t know why) Electrons have a charge (negative) So if we move electrons, we get a magnetic field!
7
The Magnetic Field of a Current- Carrying Wire Magnetism is created when we move a charged particle. Run a current through a wire and you get a large magnetic field.
8
Other Methods to increase Magnetism Since a wire with a current has a magnetic field, if we loop the wire we get a stronger magnetic “force” in the center of the loop. More loops or more current, more magnetic strength.

Putting these together: Motors Motors Using the concept of a current creates a magnet and reversing the current creates an opposite pole magnet Using the concept of a current creates a magnet and reversing the current creates an opposite pole magnet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFGqf6 AfDB0&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFGqf6 AfDB0&feature=related
