What is Intellectual Property? As by the Oxford Dictionary of Law… Intangible property that includes “patents”,“trademarks”,”copyri ghts” and registered and un registered “design rights”. By WIPO publications refers to as….. Creation of mind of innovations literary and artistic works,symbols names and images used in commerce

CATEGORIES OF INTERLLECTUAL PROPERTY Industrial Property Which consists of patents of innovation trade and service marks, industrial designs,geographical indications of origin,un disclosed information integrated circuits integration. Copyrights Which include literary and artistic works performance, architectural designs and some kinds of computer databases.

The abuse of protected works right owners that has created sides that manifest themselves in a global categorization a)Developed nations b)Developing nations c)Least developed nations The evergrowing infringement of rights and piracy Trade in counterfeit goods.

Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPs) The introduction of intellectual property protection system in multilateral trade system negotiations culminated the formulation of the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPs) As solution to the problems Does it really solve the problem?

Intellectual Propety as a tool for social and economic development Use of IP to generate wealth and povety alleviation -Creators of artistic works and music -Authors of literary works -developers of technologic inventions and innovation a)Formalizing these activities b)Encouraging more people to participate in the activities Resulting in the expantion of the employment base and eventually assist in economic growth and poverty alleviation.

Some of the institution dealing with IP in Tanzania Industrial Property which consists of Patents of inventions, Trade and Service Marks, Industrial designs, Geographical indications of origin, undisclosed information (Trade Secrets) and Integrated circuits topography under the mandate of BRELA Copyrights which consist of Literary and Artistic works, performances and Audiovisual works under the mandate of COSOTA Plant breeders rights and seeds are under the mandate of Ministry responsible for Agriculture. Traditional Medicines is under the Ministry responsible for Health

Suggestions and Recomendations Formulation of an Intellectual Property Institution in Tanzania. Industrial property and copyright administration to be administers by one national IP institution Identification of stakeholder Institutions Government, Public and Private engaged in Itellectual Property issues. Formulation of a National Intellectual Property Policy. Tanzania as a least developed country needs to redefine its self within the global scenario as above alluded, to enable the institution in design assist the government effectivly. Formulation of a National Intellectual Property Commission to be the oversee the National IP policy in Tanzania
