Definition The use of audio-visual can greatly enhance the value of presentation. It refers to the equipment available to us for amplifying or supplementing our message. It makes the passage lucid vivid stimulating and interesting. It helps to create attention to the listener. It also helps the speaker.

Decide the content. Appropriate medium. Suitable place for equipment. Knowledge to operate the equipment. Protect the equipment. Inspect the venue of presentation. Prepare material with great care. Ensure that their appearance and ending are properly timed.

Advantages of Blackboard
Plenty of space. One can give a feeling of spontaneity. One can involve the listeners. One can very the pace of writing. The board acts as a pressure reliever.

Tips for using blackboard
Plan carefully how you will use the blackboard. Write legibly and neatly. Hold the chock at 45 degree angle. Divide the board into several portions as per your use. Keep eye contact with the audience. Ensure that material is not hidden by the body. Allow sufficient time to absorb the material. Do underline or use colored chalks.

Overhead projector It is a clean, often superior substitute for the blackboard. It is versatile and inexpensive. It is placed nine feet away from the screen. The room should not be bright. You may prepare the transparencies beforehand or you may build up the information you wish to project.

Movie Film projector It is not only used for entertainment but also for teaching, training and advertising. Film is available in four sizes-8mm, 16mm, 35mm and 70mm. The last two are used for commercial cinema projection. Organization maintains a catalogue which you can scan to identify the films you need.

Tips for movie film projector
Check the film strip manually to ensure that there are no cracks, cuts and perforations in it. Check for proper threading, run the projector to set focus and position in it. Check and set the sound level to suit the size of the audience. Keep spare lamps, fuses and a set of belts within easy reach, to avoid inconvenience and failure.

Procedure for movie film
Switch on the machine and the projection lamp. Darken the room. Adjust sound and focus if necessary. Start showing the film. Turn off the sound and lamp simultaneously. Switch off the machine. Turn on the room lights thereafter.

Video tape recorder It is used in all the places wherever audio-time recorder is used. It can be recorded in video cassette and used for presentation. It is easily portable. For reaching a small audience this medium is used as an aid to our presentation.

Audio tape recorder It can be used to play a running commentary to what is being presented through slides. They are of two types reel-to-reel and cassette. Battery operated ones are becoming popular due to it’s portability. Sound proof room should be used. No other sound should be made.

Models It is the closest alternative to a real object such as a bridge, car, plane, etc. It would evoke considerable interest and attract close attention of the audience. The size of the model should be determined by the size of audience. Make it sufficiently strong. It should be kept at a place where it can be viewed by every member of the audience. Keep it safe when not in use .

Conclusion An aid is just an aid and not a replacement for any portion of the message. Every audio-visual aid is helpful for both the speaker and the listener. Aspects of communication, production and reception becomes vibrant and absorbing when an aid is properly used.
