3 Direct Experience Is it a given that learning from direct/first- hand experience is important? (Yolton 1977 & Kant 1781) Learning is argued to relate to the internal/external interactions which transform the ‘experience’. Jarvis (2004) agrees with the construction of experiences into knowledge, skills, values etc…

4 Direct Experience Dewey (1933) argues that for learning to take place the individual must be open and consider a range of positions/perspectives and accept the range of potential outcomes/consequences.

5 Learning Activity Reflect on your own learning, as a child, as an adult. Can you distinguish ‘learnt items’ as a result of ‘experiential learning’? – Contexts? Is it possible to categorise these ‘learnt items’ – Models/Theories; Skills; Beliefs; Values; Attitudes; Emotions?

6 Learning Activity Consider the outcomes of the ‘previous’ activity Were any of the Contexts related to learning with IT? What role might learning with IT play in the aspects of learning suggested by Jarvis? – Models/Theories; Skills; Beliefs; Values; Attitudes; Emotions?
