2. Check the rubber hose for cracks and signs of deterioration. Replace the hose if necessary.

3. Connect the free end of the hose to the gas outlet on the laboratory bench. Turn the vent until only about one- third of the vent is open.

4. First practice making a spark, or light a match and hold it near the top opening of the burner. THEN turn on the gas outlet valve and make a spark over the burner

5. The gas mixture should ignite immediately. If you are unable to ignite the gas, turn off the gas outlet and allow the gas vapors to dissipate before trying to ignite the burner again. Fan the area.

6. A hot flame will not have any orange. The flame will appear bright blue with a darker inner cone. The hottest region of the flame is at the tip of this dark inner cone.

7. This is a cool flame with an orange combustion zone. In order to get a hot flame you must open the air holes by turning the vent of the burner.

8. When the air holes are half open, the blue cone becomes difficult to see

9. an example of a hot flame. Remember the hottest part of the flame is just above the inner cone.

10. Once you have a hot flame, you can adjust the height with the control knob. Don’t try to adjust using the gas valve on the desk, it will just go out.
