Lab Equipment

BEAKER Beakers hold solids or liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated

Erlenmyer Flask Hold solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated.

Graduated Cylinder Used to measure volumes of liquids.

Test Tube Temporarily holds liquids – can be used for testing for the presence of various chemicals

Test Tube Holder Useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle

Test tube rack For holding test tubes…DUH!

Watch Glass Used to hold a small amount of solid We use weighing boats

Tongs

Bunsen Burner Used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids.

Ring Stand Safe & convenient way to perform reactions that require heating using a Bunsen burner

Wire Gauze Sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker

Evaporating Dish Used for the heating of stable solid compounds and elements

Crucible with Lid Used for heating certain solids, particularly metals, to very high temperatures

Clay Triangle Used as a support for porcelain crucibles when being heated over a Bunsen burner.

Thermometer Do I really need to tell you what a thermometer does??

Volumetric Flask Used for the mixing of chemicals. Narrow neck prevents splash exposure.

Disposable Pipette Used to transfer a small volume of liquid

Volumetric Pipette Used to measure and transfer a specific amount of a liquid

Buret Long graduated tubes used in titration

Water bottle/wash bottle Has a spout that delivers a wash solution to a specific area. Distilled water is the only liquid that should be used in a wash bottle.

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Provides a wealth of information about a given chemical – more to come tomorrow!

Probeware
