MODEL LESSON FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES

Day 1 – Student Investigation Bell Ringer – “A newscaster reports…” question 39 pg 22 Glencoe, 200e edition or question 51 pg 27 Glencoe 2008 edition Safety Importance – RULES Investigating Five White substances – Observations & LIQUID test Homework – how to distinguish each substance Day 2 – Student Investigation Continued Bell Ringer – Review Homework Review trials and HEAT test Homework – Prepare for next day’s investigation Day 3 - Student Investigation - Unknown Bell Ringer – Review homework/share Student inquiry-lab What substances do you have? Day 4 – Model Lesson Debriefing Debrief lesson Discuss sources of error FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES OVERVIEW OF MODEL LESSON

Question 51 pg 27 A newscaster reports, “The air quality today is poor. Visibility is only a quarter mile. Pollutants in the air are expected to rise above 0.085 ppm in the next eight hour average. Spend as little time outside today as possible if you suffer from asthma or other breathing problems.” Which statements are qualitative and which are quantitative? FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES BELL RINGER (Glencoe 2008) Qualitative Statements: Air quality today is poor Quantitative Statements: Spend as little time outside today as possible if you suffer from asthma or other breathing problems Visibility is only a quarter mile Pollutants in the air are expected to rise above 0.085 ppm Eight hour average

Question 39 pg 22 A newscaster reports, “The air quality today is poor. Visibility is only a quarter mile. Pollutants in the air are expected to rise above 0.085 ppm in the next eight hour average. Spend as little time outside today as possible if you suffer from asthma or other breathing problems.” Which statements are qualitative and which are quantitative? 5 In two days, each group will be given an unknown. Your task in this investigation will be to: FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY ONE – STUDENT INVESTIGATION “Determine what substances are found in your unknown.” In order to complete your task, three tests will be conducted on five individual substances that may be found in your unknown. Test 1: Detailed Observations Test 2: Liquid test Test 3: Heat test

SAFETY Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES are students ever to taste any substances in the lab. Safety goggles must remain on during the entire lab. If liquids come in contact with skin, wash immediately with soap and water. FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY ONE – STUDENT INVESTIGATION

Test 1: Detailed Observations FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY ONE – STUDENT INVESTIGATION Substance Observations Dry Liquid 1Liquid 2Liquid 3Heat A B C D E

Test 2: LIQUID TEST Materials: Five white substances: A, B, C, D, E Three Liquids: 1, 2, and 3 Wax paper 5 popsicle sticks FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY ONE – STUDENT INVESTIGATION

Homework: Review data collected and make a list of ways that would allow you to distinguish one substance from another. FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY ONE – STUDENT INVESTIGATION

Compare your list of information and observations from your homework with your lab partners. FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY TWO – BELL RINGER

Complete any data collection for Test 1 and Test 2 Test 3: Heat Test Materials Five white substance: A, B, C, D, and E Hot plate or butane burner Aluminum well plate Popsicle sticks Tongs FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY TWO – STUDENT INVESTIGATION

If time permits: Students will design their own procedures for testing unknown substance. FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY TWO – STUDENT INVESTIGATION

Students review and discuss with lab partner(s) laboratory procedures completed for homework FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY THREE – BELL RINGER

TESTING UNKNOWN SUBSTANCE Materials Unknown substance Hot plate or butane burner Aluminum well plate Popsicle sticks Tongs Three Liquids: 1, 2, and 3 Wax paper Five White Substances Assessment sheet FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY THREE – INQUIRY INVESTIGATION

Homework Complete Post Lab Reflection FIVE WHITE SUBSTANCES DAY THREE – INQUIRY INVESTIGATION

KNOWLEDGE of INQUIRY ASPECT What does this mean to you? Give an example from the activity Science investigations ALL BEGIN with a QUESTION There is no single SCIENTIFIC METHOD The QUESTION GUIDES the INQUIRY PROCEDURES The SAME PROCEDURES may not equal the SAME RESULTS PROCEDURES can influence RESULTS CONCLUSIONS and DATA must be CONSISTENT SCIENCTIFIC DATA and SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE are NOT the same EXPLANATIONS are from DATA collected and PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

ASPECTS of NATURE of SCIENCE ASPECT What does this mean to you? Give an example from the activity Science is TENTATIVE There is CREATIVITY in the work of science Scientists make OBSERVATIONS AND INFERENCES There is SUBJECTIVITY in the work of scientists There are THEORIES AND LAWS in science Science is affected by SOCIETY AND CULTURE Science is BASED ON DATA AND FACTS
